I have had an idea for a scenario for a long time. Unfortunately, I have no background in creating mods or anything. But maybe somebody who does will think it's a good idea and will make one. There should be a 2012 A.D. scenario. I don't think the mod needs to be too complex. It could be done just with the basic units that are already in the game. It doesn't need to be extremely complex like some of the WWII mods out there. They are fun, but very difficult to make. I think basically a "vanilla" version would be good enough. The world is an interesting place right now and a mod/scenario set in today's time could be just as fun as a WWII mod. I'll list the reasons why I think this would be a good mod, and at the same time explain how I think it should be designed. If other people have other ideas about how it should be that's good too.

  • America is the undisputed superpower. But it's position is not as certain as it was in the past. America's position is kind of what Rome's was in 400 A.D. America has the most powerful military by far, but it's spread out all over the world and is overstretched. It's starting to become difficult to project enough force at one point to beat a major civ if there was a war. The military is extremely powerful overall, just spread way too thin to get much of anything done. A smart strategy would probably be to choose what parts of the world you can afford to let fall into enemy hands, and moving forces to areas that you need to keep. The economy is also bad. Even though America's military is the strongest, if they started losing large numbers of units in a major war they would be much more difficult to replace than they used to be. This is due to major economic problems, and industry being sent overseas.
  • China is a rising superpower. At the start of the game China has the strongest economy. It also has the largest military by far, although many of the units are outdated compared to America, so America is still stronger overall. That's not to say China's military is outdated though, they still have large numbers of mech infantry, rocket artillery, jet fighters, modern armor, etc. China could easily catch up to America and upgrade it's obsolete units, and build even more than it already has. An eventual confrontation between America and China is very probable. China in it's need for resources will want to expand aggressively, and America will have a problem with this.
  • Russia is a re-emerging Superpower. Russia has a huge nuclear arsenal, the largest modern armor and rocket artillery force, and a very powerful air force. Russia is a serious force to reckon with, and at the start of the game is really the only civ that can stand up to America in a face to face confrontation (assuming America could relocate enough forces from other parts of the world to effectively fight Russia, as America is spread very thin). At the start of the game China can go face to face with America to an extent, but not on the level Russia can. With American forces spread so thin, anyplace near Russia's border (with the exception of China) could be quickly invaded, including Europe's eastern cities.
  • The Middle East is extremely unstable. Israel and Iran are basically in a cold war that could turn hot the next turn. America has forces all over the region is likely to get involved in any war that starts in the middle east as Israel (probably should be a city state) is an ally of America and America wants the oil. Israel is very powerful, but only powerful enough to protect itself from an invasion, it can't project it's power. Iran is also very powerful. Iran has the capability to project it's power all over the Mideast. American forces in the region are extremely vulnerable to Iran's huge arsenal of guided missiles. American carriers off Iran's coast are especially vulnerable. America can beat Iran in a war, but it does not currently have enough force in the region to do so. Many reinforcements would be needed and it would come at a cost of leaving other parts of the world undefended from Russia and China.
  • Africa is probably the richest continent as far as natural resources go. Africa has no major civs that have the capability to project power. So Africa should be mostly city states. Major civs compete to ally themselves with city states to gain access to resources. Many city states are fighting wars with each other. Overall, the African continent is full of city states warring with each other, and a place where major civs compete for resources. Since Africa is made up of mostly city states, it is easy to conquer since there is no unity and a major civ only needs to worry about one city state at a time. Most of the city states are allied with a major civ though, so this could lead to a much larger conflict between the city states, and the major powers.
  • Europe may be considered a superpower by some. Although with a terrible economy they probably won't become a full fledged superpower any time soon. Europe does have a strong military, but if facing a full scale invasion from Russia would need help from America. Europe does want to restore it's former position as the leader of the world, so they will aggressively ally with African city states for resources. Europe may even launch an all out invasion of the entire Mediterranean and African area. This could be dangerous though, as it could leave Europe open to invasion from Russia. Europe has potential, but at the start of the game it's just "not there" and Europe needs to get it's act together. Eventually, Europe may be strong enough to invade Russia. To get to that point will be difficult though.
  • South America is relatively peaceful. There are some belligerent city states (to represent Venezuela and others). Brazil is the most powerful country in the region and could probably repel a moderately sized American attack, although Brazil's position would be hopeless in a full scale attack. Regardless, Brazil is not a country that can be walked over and could serve as a major ally for one of the superpowers. Brazil may potentially expand it's influence throughout South America and become a superpower itself.

Those are my basic thoughts for a 2012 A.D. scenario. There could be other countries too such as Canada, Australia, Japan, Saudi Arabia, India and many others. I just didn't list everything. Things could be different too. Instead of just Europe, there could be all the countries; Germany, France and others. Many other things could change too. But I think the basic idea is good though.

Would America maintain it's position in the world? Would China become a superpower and push America out of the way, or would attempting to do so lead to a fatal conflict with America? Would Iran wipe out American forces in the Middle East and conquer Israel? Maybe America would send in the forces needed to crush Iran, but lose Hawaii to the Chinese and Eastern Europe to the Russians as a trade off? Maybe Brazil will conquer South America and become one of the superpowers. Europe may invade Russia and become the dominant force in the world. There are so many things that could happen with a scenario like this and that's why I think it would be fun to play.
