I think this applies to laptop only. Mine is about 3.5 yrs old and recently I have been getting tons of crashes with my display driver. At first I cannot play large or huge maps, then gradually my machine cannot handle the modern era in small maps and now my computer crashes on tiny maps during the medieval age. I try the latest driver and downgrade to one previous graphic driver, but the same problem persists. I suspect that my computer has caught a virus or maybe the background program Window Defender is causing the problem, or maybe my machine is simply too old to handle civ4 anymore. I hope I dont have to go back to civ3, because civ4 is much superior. My dxdiag file is at the bottom of:

I read in another forum that some players experience this similar graphic problem when they play World of Warcraft. They recommend either using an earlier graphic driver or use software transform and lightning. Should I do either one in order to continue play civ4?

I try the software transform option by changing the target:

"C:\Civ4BeyondSword.exe" to "C:\Civ4BeyondSword.exe" -swtnl

It seems to do work, but my laptop heats up very fast. Every 2-3 minute that I play I had to minimize the game to cool down my laptop. Very inconvenient.
