I'm suspecting I have spyware or something...

Okay, I have been having some problems with my computer.

First, some type of toolbar seems to have installed itself on my computer (and runs itself with Internet Explorer). I can't uninstall this thing and I have no idea where it came from (although I do know that my sister may have caused it to happen when she was using the computer). This thing is pretty wierd because in every website I go to this thing makes hyperlinks out of most words in the site leading to the search engine that powers this toolbar.
Here's the toolbar:

Next, I have a strange program that I downloaded that my friend told me to dl when we were talking on AIM. I have no clue what it is, it doesn't work, and gives an error message when I try to delete it (it's on my desktop), and I also think it runs at startup because the taskbar shows the icon for it breifly. This program is titled 'pictures', has no icon, and it is considered a MS-DOS program, which is kind of odd. When I try to run it, nothing happens. It shows up in the processes section of the Task Manager as 'pictures.com'.

Now, something I just noticed while I was writing this post, my task manager is showing that a large number of instances of a program that I wrote with C++ is running even though I never ran it. Of course, this damn thing I wrote was to be annoying, but I doesn't make copies of itself like that. In the task manager, I right clicked one of the instances of that program, selected 'Goto Process', and it listed a strange .exe that I've never heard of. Its name was 'kalnder.exe'. I don't know what to make of this, but the program seems to keep making new instances of itself (running itself over and over again). I'm not even sure if this is the same 'Project1' that I wrote.

Does anyone know what to make of these different things? Are they linked?

First, download Ad-Aware and Spybot Search + Destroy. Run both to scan for and remove either adware or spyware. Secondly, switch to Firefox or another browser (could be IE-based like Avant or Maxthon) - IE is simply not that great. Do you have an Antivirus program? If not, I would get some sort of free one from the web. Also: do not trust that 'friend' of yours.

Yes I have virus protection, but it's not alerting me about anything.

And also, this friend is a chick and I don't think she has any interest in destroying my computer.

And about the multiplying program thing, a new instance of the program seems to start every 5 minutes. I counted 11 instances, and then 5 min later I counted 12 instances.

holly cow! you got 71 running processes!

I, for instance, have only 22.

Your system has all kinds of bad stuff...

Well I ran Spybot and it caught 120 things, Norton is still running but it caught and destroyed a major virus - Backdoor something or other...

However, that program is still making copies of itself. It's up to 15 now.

Yeah, aviod IE, simply becouse that's the oldest browser out there (Netscape changed their code compleatly at one point, so you can't call it the oldest).

The most popular way to delete unwanted files is to use Safe Mode Startup.

You should search you harddrive for "kalnder.exe" and deleate that too. You can search you regestry for this too. Be careful with that though, bad move can make windows not run.

Never run a program that comes off of IM. Don't even download it. It doesn't matter if it came from someone you know. Most likely she didn't even know that her IM account was sending the messages, and most likely your account is now sending those messages, as that is one of the ways that type of virus spreads: by getting people to believe that someone they know has told them to run the program.

Well, this program still sits upon my desktop, it wasn't removed with my virus scan.

How can someone gain access to your AIM while you are online?

I wouldn't say never. If your chatting with the person and and they send it over st your request you can DL it.

BTW my sig has several more anti spyware programs in it.

If you requested it, then that's acceptable. But if someone (apparently) spontaneously suggests downloading this program, then don't.

There are viruses that infect instant messenger programs. Basically, you receive a message (usually from someone you know whose IM program has been infected) telling you to download and run a program. If you follow those instructions, the program infects your IM program with the virus, and then your IM program sends out messages to people on your list, and so on.

Not just that, IE's security policy is horrible. Major updates are only issued once in a blue moon, whereas exploits come fast and crackers hit hard. If you look at Secuina, there's a helluva lot of major security warnings that still haven't been fixed. Opera released security releases 7.51 u1 and u2 to fix up some major holes, and Mozilla released 1.04 and other minor updates to fix up its holes in a matter of days or weeks.

Don't get these, they aren't as good as the microsoft anti-spyware. get that somewhere at www.microsoft.com it's really effective.

Secondly, I would suggest you have virus problems more so than spyware. Are your Norton's definitions up to date? (I.E. have a current subscription?) Regardless, I hear mostly bad things about Norton's. I would suggest McAfee. I know them to work (fixed my computer, thats for sure) plus the sponsor my team's stadium (Oakland A's).

The link is in my sig.

I have found the M$ antispyware to be good but not the greatest. Having more then one antispyware program is a good idea.
