Improving grumbler's tech tree utility

After finding this utility through the main site's info center, I'm posting this in the hopes some Python expert out there might be able to help.

As discussed here, the utility has a problem finding the minimum path of a given tech. I reported the bug in the Bugs subforum.

If this has been discussed somewhere else already, or if there was another utility that fixed it, or some of you could have a peek at the code (it really isn't much) and come up with a solution, or if you just generally wish to suggest a working algorithm, please, I'd be interested in hearing what you have to say. :)
 
Has anybody discovered and fixed the bug in Civ IV (all versions) that make the science advisor not always take the shortest research path to any given tech?

(this "bug", or "suboptimal coding" is present in grumbler's utility too)
