Independent Cities

Sorry if this has been asked before, is there an in-game way to go to war with Independent cities?

There are many times where I wish I could go through independent territory or take over a city.

Just walk into their territory and it asks you if you want to declare war.

Oh, didn't realize that at first because left clicking doesn't do anything, have to right click to do it. Doh!

Control-click on the civ's name in the corner of the screen... you have to have the right tech though.

This is basic civ4 stuff, read your manual or the reference guide on this site.

You cannot have diplomacy with indipendents and minor nations, only war declaration. At best you can go to peace with a lucky event about diplomacy.

One difficulty arises if your only land border with an independent happens to be right where the city is. In this case, you can't use siege units to bombard without suiciding a unit in an attack of the city first, because you can't declare war without entering the territory.

What you can do is ordering another unit (preferably one that cannot move anymore) to enter or attack that territory (either with go to or right click). You will then be asked wether to declare war or not and therefore won't have to sacrifice any unit.
