My system freezes everytime the second cd is loaded, meaning a reboot. Anyone else have this problem (and have a fix?)

Figured I'd bump this up since I've gotten no reaction yet :D

I assume since I haven't actually gotten the program running yet this is not a DirectX (I've loaded new version anyway).

I have 2.53ghz Alienware with 1gig memory, Nvidia GeForce 6200 with 256mb, etc.

Thoughts?

LOL.

There's a 180 second delay between searches on the forums. Too funny. Are you really experiencing that heavy a load that a 3 minute delay is required?

Anyone have any ideas? How come the developer/distributor don't provide help on their sites?

Still cannot load 2nd CD without system crashing. Finishes CD1 at

C:\Assets\Movies\WOnders\Versailes.bik

Then freezes....

Thoughts? Suggestions? Deleted and started over three times...

Sorry you are having problems tinkle.
I have no solution for you, but I hate seeing a player make a plea for help, and the only responses in his thread are from himself. *ouch*

Have you tried the search feature for other posts with similar problems? I seem to remember seeing similar problems with other errors, but can't remember what thread they were in. Take a look, I suppose, and I hope you get yourself fixed up and civ'ing soon.

I have searched, most crashes seem to be post installation... haven't seen one where the install freezes starting the 2nd CD...

Thanks for responding!

How does your system respond when you pop in the second cd when you are just within Windows and not installing Civilization IV.

Hey Tinkle,

You are not alone. Unfortunately, none of us have answers yet.

In response to asmodai, when I pop in disc 2 when not installing Civ4 the auto-insert kicks on and opens up a window labeled "CIV4DISC2". In that window is just one file. It is a cabinet file labeled "data3", and it is about 660MB in size.

Thanks

hey Tinkle,

Take your game and exchange it for another. Go to another store if you have to, but there are bad discs out there. I exchanged mine and played for hours. No bugs, no glitches. The game is fun.

Good luck

And the error message was "Catastrophic Failure" wasn't it? I have read on other boards that a batch of Civ IV games had a bad disk 2. Mine did the same thing and I had the additional problem of having purchased it in March and only getting around to loading it this month, which pretty much puts the brakes on taking it back to the store and replacing it. I had written 2K tech support on August 11 and have not received a reply. Today, I gave them a call at the toll free number and there is a 90 day manufacturer's warranty on materials, i.e., disks; so to get a new copy I will have to ship the game and $7.50 US to some, at this time-awaiting the instruction email, unspecified address after which they will send me a new game (within 28 days).

Hope that helps,

Toofew

I just purchased the game this weekend and I had the same problem when loading on my laptop. It would stop loading and crash when inserting the second disk. I took the disks to my desktop and they loaded just fine.

For my laptop, I looked up the properties of the CD/DVD drive, and disabled DLA (Drive Letter Access). After that, I was able to install the game completely and no longer crashed on the second disk.

I am however having a problem starting it on my laptop, so I am sure it is one of the driver issues. Game starts and I get the initial loading screen, then it stops, sits for about 2 minutes, and I get the old "Windows has encountered a serious error" dialog. I know everything works due to being able to install it and play it on my desktop, but I want to get it working on my laptop instead. Once I find out what is causing my new problems I will let everyone know in case others are having an issue like this as well. I read on one of the threads about the firmware of the drive, so I need to check that yet.

When inserting disk 2 hold down the left shift key for about 15 seconds, after the 15 seconds just release and click ok.

Or another way around it would be to copy the conents of both disk into the same folder and your desktop and then run the setup.exe from that folder.

It shoud then install without a problem;)
