Invincible Treasure

In the Age of Discovery Conquest (SP) I played as Aztec and was at war with portugal. I was attacking a portugal city and had it surrounded for a few turns while I took out the three Pikemen defending it. I guess one of the Pikemen or workers in the city had a treasure. When I killed the last Pikeman, instead of taking over the city, my unit just went back to his square. A treasure showed up over the city. Every time I tried to enter the city, my unit would start attacking an invisible defender. Sometimes an attacker would win, and sometimes he would die. I'd guess I won about five battles, and lost three units to the invincible treasure. The treasure would never die. Aren't you supposed to just walk in and claim the treasure?

There were probably one or more Missionaries in the city. Missionaries in that scenario are invisible and wouldn't show up when you are fighting them.

It appears that the non European civs don't have any units that can Detect Invisible units.
