Babe Ruth in baseball, Wayne Gretzky in ice hockey, Wilt Chamberlain in basketball, Jonah Lomu in rugby. He was the all-time World Cup try-scorer with 15, equaled just this year by Bryan Habana (a "try" in rugby is a touchdown). He was seemingly designed in a CRPG, a physical specimen with a package of skills to inflict maximum mayhem. Size, speed, strength, technique, vision, and hands. If you're familiar with American football, think Jim Brown.

Unfortunately, I never got to see Lomu play. I didn't get interested in rugby until later, and it's still a beyond-the-fringe sport here in the USA, so I basically only get to watch games by way of the web. Back in the late '90s, it would have been easier to fly to Europe than to find a rugby match on television here.

Lomu was a steamroller - 6' 5" / 1.95m, 260 lbs / 118kg - and yet he played wing, where speed and agility and anticipation are the keys to the kingdom. The aforementioned Bryan Habana is a more normal-sized winger, at 5' 11" / 1.8m, 205 lbs / 93kg. Lomu reminds me of the New England Patriots' Rob Gronkowski, but in a game of nonstop 40-minute halves where every player has both offensive and defensive responsibilities.

Real shame this, I think the manner of his death was brutal too.

There is an image of him in a New Zealand airport just coming back from the World Cup in England. He looks strong and healthy but only a day later he was dead. Really sad.

Aye, physically he was an absolute monster...there's that notorious video where he just runs through Mike Catt like he wasn't even there.
