I'm sure this has been asked a million times, but I'm new here so I hope you will indulge me.

Sometimes a leader will hurry production of a wonder for me, and sometimes I get the message "so and so wonder cannot be hurried." I have no idea what is different. Have I accidentally hit a preference which prevents wonders from being rushed or something?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to CFC, Freek!

Two issues: First, what kind of leader are we talking about? Second, what version are you playing? Scientific Great Leaders can rush Great Wonders in all versions (IIUC), but Military Great Leaders can only rush Great Wonders in Vanilla and PTW. In Conquests, MGLs can still hurry Small Wonders, but not Great Wonders. (I think that's right. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please.)

Thanks for your reply, aarbraxan. I'm not sure what "vanilla" is, but I have the so-called "gold edition" whatever that is. The only kind of leader there that I'm aware of is the military leader, but I'm still having the problem.

Vanilla is the basic Civ 3, with no expansions. I think that Gold contains Vanilla and PTW (Play the World). If the leader appeared on the battlefield after an elite unit won a battle, it's a Military Great Leader. If it appeared in your capitol after the discovery of a new technology, it's a Scientific Great Leader. Does that help?

Scientific Great Leaders exist only in Conquests. :)
And after dozens of game, I still didnt get a single one.:wallbash:

I'm not sure about what Gold edition contains. How many civs are you allowed to play?

Well, I've only had the game about a week, and yes it does contain the PTW option, but I don't know if (or when) I'm using that option as opposed to the "vanilla." I think that I am NOT using PTW, but am not sure.

Here's what happened. In my first game I aquired several military leaders, and immediately used each of them to create a wonder (Hoover, TOE, Art of War, etc). Later, when I tried to use one on modern wonders (internet, SETI), I got the message "The internet cannot be hurried," etc.

At that point, I just assumed that wonders from the modern era were excluded. But, in my next game, I can't use them for anything--even ones they had applied to in the previous game (such as Smith's economic wonder). So now I'm thinking maybe I hit some option with prevents leaders from completing wonders.

Any ideas?

I don't play PTW, so take that into account. That said, I'm unaware of any "age limitation" which would prohibit a Leader from hurrying the wonders you've mentioned. Are you trying to switch to a wonder after you've started a build? Have you by any chance chopped a forest nearby or disbanded units in the city where you want the wonder? Forest chops and shields from disbanding are "tainted" shields and will prevent you from being able to switch to a wonder.

I suspect that you are playing PTW, as I would imagine that PTW becomes the default when it's installed. Unfortunately, I don't know how to tell if you're Playing PTW or Vanilla. Dig around through the forums, because I'm pretty sure that I've seen posts where someone has listed the changes that were made between vanilla and PTW.

Edit: Here is one such post.

Edit #2: Also check out Ginger Ale's FAQ here.

Thanks a lot, Aab. The "tainted" shield factor may be in play here. Let me try a few things and see.

from the post about MA wonders it seems that You play PTW, cause internet GW was introduced there

I'm kinda embarrassed to admit it now, but I figured out my mistake. When I started, I was following the instructions and using the command shift/h when the leader was in a city to hurry production. That worked just like it's sposed to.

Later, I started moving the leader to a city, then right clicking on him. Oblivious to the rest of the menu, I would just click on "hurry production," thinking I was giving that command to the leader. In fact, I was just using the generic hurry command for the city, which never allows wonders to be hurried.

Really frustrated me until I figured it out. I spent a lot of time starting skirmishes and building military unit just to get leaderers 1 out of 16 (victorious) battles with units who had advanced (after massive attrition) to the "elite" rank. Then when I get one, I don't know how to use it right, eh?

Don't feel too bad. The first time I ever got a leader I was playing Egypt, and when he appeared I figured he must be VERY strong, so I used him to attack a Roman Legionaire. I couldn't figure out why he didn't win and where he disappeared to. :p

I found out how to get SGL's They are tied to elite unit combat victories, just like MGL's. If you're close to developing a new tech, and win afew battles with elite units without getting an MGL, then your chances are good of getting na SGL. It's stupid that it works that way, but that's the way it is. I have tested this again and again. I've saved a situation. Fought several battles, resetting when a MGL appears. When the tech broke, I got the SGL. BUt, when I kept the MGL, I didn't get the SGL.

Fair warning to new players: the above quote contains grievous misinformation.
In other words: don't believe a word of it!
Thank you!

It's a known fact the the SGL and the MGL are the same individual, like Superman and Clark Kent. I know this because you never see them both at the same time, or even two of either at once. BTW MGL never occur near towns or cities beginning with the letter H unless that city was founded on a river. A good thing to know, I bet cha.

bustedsynapses must be trying to be the Al Bundy of Civ strategy.

Do not cash a check from this man = Al Bundy

Do not take advice from this poster = bustedsynapses

I don't mean this in a mean spirited way, but I've read several posts by you and they are the worst most inaccurate information that I've seen on this forum.
