I'm sometimes stuck in places without proper internet. Just dial-up, or some rickety satellite uplink that fails with the slightest sight of rain. That makes checking the heavy pages of my GMX and uni e-mail quite a chore.
Fortunately, both offer IMAP access. What I usually do is hook up my laptop, and let an e-mail client (Opera) handle the e-mail, no need to load the entire page. This is not always possible, so I figured: isn't there some sort of online e-mail client with a mobile site (i.e. easy on bandwidth) that will let me do just this? Zoho.com comes pretty close, but offers only POP support, which isn't terribly practical.
