I apologize in advance, because you all have probably seen this a million times. However, I'm not sure what to do about this error message (I've reinstalled the game and installed the latest patch):

This is Civ3 Conquests with the 1.22 patch.

Thanks =)

Does the file exist? And is it in the right place?

No, it doesn't exist. The folder is there, but the file isn't. I kind of thought reinstalling the game would fix this, but I guess it didn't.

Does the file exist anywhere on your PC?

Hmm.

I'm wondering if the install discs are bad.

I don't think it does, I've searched for it and can't find it anywhere.

I know the discs have worked previously, I stopped playing C3C about a year ago and I'm just now coming back to it. Maybe a scratch has affected it? There are definitely a few scratches on the disc =/

A scratch could be the problem.

But it might just be easier to buy C3C retail and not have to worry about scratches.

:hmm:

Before I went that far, I would attempt to install the game on a friend's PC and see what happens. Just make sure it is Windows XP. All you want to see is if it does install and play a bit. Vista has some user issues with C3C and the default installation directory, due to Vista's enhanced security, so I would avoid it for this test, if possible.

Played CIV3 tons - afriend has CIV3 CoOmplete, and we played some head to head stuff, and I liked teh new features, so bought Complete as well.

It keeps crashing around 200-450AD. On the turn it crashes it does it after having cycled through all the builds, and influence expansion, and so right before the turn starts -

LOAD ERROR
Missing entry in text\PediaIcons.txt: ANIMNAME_

There aren't any unit types that weren't there the turn before, so not sure why it suddenly finds a missing entry!

Windows XP,

These are NEW discs, I have reinstalled multiple times, applied all the patches (CONQ 1.22, compl 1.29) alone together and in various orders.

I'm gonna guess it is a registry error due to multiple versions of Civ III.

I would un-install all versions of the game, making sure you've made copies of all the saves.

I would then use Windows Explorer to manually delete any Civ III-ish folders that remain. This can be tricky, since the different owners of Civ III used different directories. So check Program Files/Atari and Program Files/Infogrames (?) to be sure. Don't trust the un-install to find/remove/fix everything.

Next, I would download WinASO Registry Optimizer, a freeware utility, and run it several times. The freeware version will only fix 10 errors at a time, but you can run it as many times as you need. This will remove any traces of Civ III in the registry that point to phantom locations on the hard drive. And fix other things, too.

(You could also defrag the hard drive at this point. It won't fix anything but should make everything work a bit faster. And perhaps download/run SpyBot Search and Destroy, Spywareblaster and AdAware. These three things will look for and remove spyware and such. All are free downloads. I mean, if you're going to take the time to do some PC housecleaning, do it well! :D)

Now I would reinstall Civ III Complete. It will not need to be patched, since this version has all the patches already installed.

At this point, you should have a clean install and the game should play just fine.

hi there :D

try going into the following directory and check to see if the INI file matches up:

Program Files/Infrogrames Interactive/Civilization III/Art/Units

look for that "Leader Ancient Times" unit folder; it should be in this directory since it is not in the Civilization III/Conquest/Art/Units one.

that type of error is telling you that the INI file (text file inside the unit file) and the actual unit folder do not correspond (they must in order for it to not crash).

if this isn't the problem then there's always trying to place the "Leader Ancient Times" (or a replacement/derivative thereof) in the Conquests/Art directory.

greetings

i've encountered this a handful of times myself and there's a real simple (yet birdbrained) solution to it. open up the PediaIcons text file found in the following directory: Civilization III/Conquests/Text

cycle down to the very bottom of the file and you'll see the section with that "ANIMNAME" entry. go to the very last entry and just below it type in the following (yes! it's a blank entry!):
#ANIMNAME_

this should be above the Wonder Splash Art entries.
