Maybe it's a well known micromanagement trick, but it's new for me :) When there's one turn left until you get a research advance, bring up domestic advisor and move research slider left as far as it can go with research time left staying 1 turn - at later stages, it can give you a turn's worth of very high income (like jumping from 200 to 700+). Of course, don't forget to move it back after you get the advance, hehe.

Most likely your just making your next advance take an extra turn. It has been my observation that the game does keep track of left over science points so by turning science way down you still get it the next turn but its near the end of the turn, if you leave it alone you get your advance near the start of the turn, your advisor pops up and asks you what to change to then you get a head start on that advance as the game goes through the rest of your cities.

Right - what Woody said.

When you research a new advance, you immediately select the next thing to work on - right there at the beginning of your turn when you are going through each city 1 by 1.

So moving the slider down can get you more money that turn while still allowing you to finish your research that turn, but it is just slowing down the next thing you research.

Shields on the other hand ARE wasted, so you could micro manage cities that aren't using every square by moving citizens to make more food or commerce and fewer shields towards the end of a project if you can juggle them without lengthening the production time. NP for a few cities, but a heck of a lot of work for a 30 to 70 city late game empire.
