Mayan Long-count woes...

The other day I set about a strategy that would allow me to create a Great Person before either the Long-Count got kicking or I spawned a Great Person from the Liberty finisher.

The plan was simple... I would complete three early wonders (in this case those which gave a GE point) until I accumulated 3 or 4 per turn. So I got Artemis, Stonehenge, and Great Pyramids, as well as the Oracle (yeah, not GE).

I was thinking chapeau Mr. Pacal (pat on the back)!!

Fast Forward to turn 80 with one turn left until the Great Library is to finish and, hence, the beginning of the long count. I was thinking ... well I'll spawn my first GE on turn 87 before the Long-Count matures. Turns out that on turn 86 the Long-Count triggered, one turn before I was to spawn a GE in my capital (had 99 GE points accumulated).

So I decide to re-roll (prolonging tech by 1 turn):
turn 82 beginning of long-count, turn 86 long-count triggers
turn 83 beginning of long-count, turn 86 long-count triggers
turn 84 beginning of long-count, turn 86 long-count triggers

WTH I am thinking....
turn 85 beginning of long-count, turn 87 GE spawn in capital, turn 105 1st Great Person from long-count (what??)...

What am I missing?? Is the crap broken?? Seriously. What could be the cause of this?

Ok the calendar goes from 4000 BC to 2050 AD. The Long count calendar goes on the same principal. For instance (small joke) 2012 is always going to be the end of the 13th bak'tun and thus on that turn will be the last possible GP you can get via the long count.

I had started taking notes on when each of them hit, but basically at specific turn counts, if you have researched Theology, you'll get a free GP. Turn 105 is one of them, as is turn 86. You delaying the tech will do nothing, the only way you could make it work is if you could make your GE come out on turn 86 instead of 87, however since you are doing it with wonders... That's a maddening amount of precision you would need. That you are almost always just better to pick a Great General, Admiral or Prophet as your first long count if you think you are going to get a relatively quick 100 GPoints GP.

I've seen that as well (complete Theology on turn 85 and not get the first long count GP until turn 105 instead of turn 86), and I don't doubt it's a bug.

cool!! thanx for the clarification :) I thought it was every 394 years after Theology was discovered

I have started a discussion about the Mayan Long Count and I am updating the first post in the discussion with turn numbers of the Long Count great people. I plan to do it for all four speeds of the game, but I have a limited amount of play time so it may take a little while.
