Our current armed forces at this point are unable to keep up with the operations that I require to plan out strategies. This is a citizen discussion to determine what our general plan for an armed buildup should be. Here is one suggestion I have had, and I think it is a good one:

To strengthen our military, we need more units. Veteran chariots or horses preferably. Some warriors as initial builds, military police, and future swords.

I strongly suggest the following actions:
  • change Groton from temple to barracks. With the new city, we have the iron in our borders and a strong military base in the SE is extremely valuable.
  • Build workers ASAP to mine some more tiles to increase production. It is absolutely ridiculous that have only 2 shields per turn in Vandelay. This could easily be doubled or tripled.
PS: Tell those not knowing it that on Monarch we have a 100% offensive(!) bonus vs. barbarians. Attack 1 vs. barbs is 2! But there is no bonus on defense. Thus spears is wrong, chariots/horses are right.

If there are any other plans either short or long term, here is where to discuss them.

BTW, this is a citizen discuttion thread for military production issues. If you have a war plan against either theBarbarians or other civs, please post them in the Ministry of Defense. (A link is in my signature).

Thank you,

We also need a sentry net. Sure these might be outdated warriors, but if we push back the fog, then no barb huts will appear. This is atleast restless barbs, and we NEED the protection. Babylon to our south, Barbs to the north. Not a good combo.

For those of you who don't know what a Sentry Net is, it's this:

- Place units in such a way (preferably on mountains), that they expose the fog of war around them.

- These units (sentry units) are usually warriors, since they're cheap to build.

Here's an example:

F = Fog (viewable fog)
* = viewable area (fog that's been unlifted)
W = Warrior (on a mountain).

Code:
FFFFFFF
F*****F
F*****F
F**W**F
F*****F
F*****F
FFFFFFF

It's in this area that no barbs will appear. HOWEVER, barbs can appear just outside the fog. So, we have to lift the fog like little blocks. (I'll make a graphic later).

on the lines of the sentry net I think one thing we need to keep in mind is watching our northern unsettled Territories.... Give Egypt (or whoever) enough time up there and they'll start taking OUR Floodplains. At the very least we need to make sure if they start landing we have a pretty good chance of knowing it.... since resources are slim I'd mainly make sure the current War in the area is near the floodplains and fish, I see that as a likely landing spot. And I think it'll give us a decent chance of catching their first landing party... though not garenteed AI tends to be fickle at times....

Here's my proposed sentry net:

Not all areas are covered, but some warriors could patrol back and forth. That way, we don't have to worry a lot about settler escorts. We should have all areas of fog unconvered. (There's some blind spots that we could easily fill in).

My worry with so many warrriors on sentry duty is our military.

A war with one of our neighbors is inevitable, whether by their terms or ours. I'd prefer a MAXIMUM of about 5 units on 'sentry duty'

In the north our main concern is the coast, (unless you're concerned about barb uprisings)

Alternate Plan:

We could use 1 on the mountain, and have a chariot or horseman (or two) run around and do a little barb farming. Once he becomes elite, we bring him in, and send in another horse for "training".

sounds like a good way to watch the northern coast to me, doesn't draw too many men, AND helps them gain experience.

:goodjob:

I have made provisions to facilitate for a quick military buildup within forty turns per suggestions of of the populace and Minister Saervok. No further compromises between growth and military are neccesary at this time.

May I ask what these provisions are?

Clearly up to now we have sacrificed growth for building darn spears. Do you intend to advocate growth now? Or even further limiting growth for military?

i like CT's alternate plan. but lets keep the sentries out of the middle, and have them more concentrated along the coasts. we could send the horses on the middle.
if anything, if a landing party attempts to land, it will be intercepted and dealt with.

this will be cheaper, more efficient in the means of intercepting landing parties, and will allow room for more improvements
(to the city, or by building units)

with this plan we will have the land secured for possible building.

I think that is a good plan, it will be conducted when our troubled along the borders are dealt with.
We don't want any undue delays, since the 2nd civ entering Middle Ages will trigger massive barbarian uprisings from all camps. I don't recall how many horsemen will attack from each camp on monarch: 6? 8? 10?

It was posted some time ago, but since forum search is disabled I didn't find it.
Does anybody recall the number ?

Although I like the idea of "harvesting" barbarians to promote our horsemen units, with Babylon possibly moving to attack Mûre I would feel very reluctant about moving troops to sentinel duties in the north. I would suggest a limitation to the number of warriors sent into the desert on these missions, possibly no more than 4 -- and even 4 represents about 1/4 of all our total warriors; a heavy commitment

true, but rather that than be laid waste by barbarians. ill look at the queues later to come up with the instructions. Unfortunately I will be late for the next turnchat by at least an hour :(

I think squeezing in some barracks and then some vet horsies will protect us from barbarian uprisings as well as provide some safety from Babylonian sneak-attacks.

We might want to pop-rush or cash-rush them. The cities appointed for these are some border cities like Mûre, Groton, St Octaviansburg and St. Lucia.
