Modern Great Merchants Too Gutless

I guess this may apply to earlier Great Merchants, too. v.1.09

a. Great Merchant unable to enter non-open borders territory directly from Transport.

b.
1) Put transport in neutral sea square right outside territory.
2) Attempt disembark Great Merchant

c. Great Merchant cannot land without declaring war
d. Great Merchant should get on the secret rubber dinghy and make landfall.


Spies from the same transport disembarked just fine. I was able to unload merchant onto a neutral square and he was able to able to enter territory from land without declaring war.
 
No you don't. Great Merchants can freely enter non-open territory, at least when they aren't jumping in from a Transport. Normally a Caravel, which can also freely enter non-open waters would be used.

All in all it was pretty worthless, as I only got 4000 gold, which was chump change at my stage of the game. Should have saved him for another golden age.
 
Hey Salty how many Great Merchants are you getting in one game? I only get about 1 the whole game. I get tons of prophets.

I get a ton of prophets, too. That merchant was my second one, the other I got because I was the first to discover corporation or whatever, and it wasn't really my merchant, because he came out of a Spanish city I conquered ages ago.
