I remember hearing about a mod for planting trees

GreenMod 2.1 seems to be the thing

That's the one I was thinking of. It has a lot of additional features, but you can find the coding that allows for tree replanting, and then just excise whatever else you don't want. The Creation and Customization forum should be able to give you more experienced help--I can mess around with the XML files, but that's about it.
