I'm hoping this may be a gimme question for someone out there...

My monitor at work has been fuzzy for a while now and it is starting to make my eyes ache at the end of every day. It's only very slightly fuzzy, and i was wondering if there is a way i could fix it, mabey something i could adjust, to fix it.

I really don't want to have to use one of the crappy 15" ones in the store room from 1979...

By the way, does anyone know what 'degauss' and 'moire' mean?

Degauss is the process of getting rid of the magnetic field that can build up on a monitor after an extended period of operation.

To try and fix the fuzziness problem, try playing around with the controls - but there may not be a lot you can do.

Seeing as you mention 'storeroom' is this a work PC? If so, there are probably laws about occupational health that require the company to give you a computer screen that doesn't cause eye strain.

Note that it may be a video card / display adapter problem - you might have some success if you fiddle with the refresh rate.

Cheers ainwood.

Yes it is a work computer but it's a small firm and i don't think they'll be in a great hurry to get me a new monitor. I'll fiddle with what you said but your probably right, i'll most likely need a newie...

Yeah, like Ainwood said, degaussing is a little option found on most monitors that when you press it, the computer screen flicks and removes all magnetic distortions. Try fiddling with your monitor controls and seeing if that helps.

If not, then I suggest lowering your computer's resolution, and the number of colors available. It can be a number of things that cause this problem. Try turning on your computer - before your OS loads, see if the fuzziness is there. If so then you know that it's a hardware problem. If it happens once Windows or another OS loads then you can probably fix it through software means.

you might consider tweaking the refresh rate in the display properties control panel. Also make sure the monitor is plugged into the video port correctly. If the monitor is not responding to any of these suggestions try giving it a good smack on the side.

seriously though a loose component on the monitors pcb could be the source of the problem and a little smack might knock it into place otherwise 15" and 14" monitors are very inexpensive at this point (under a 100 dollars) check out ebay and look for a company called Whaam! they sell used monitors for little more than shipping costs.

The refresh rate should be lowered, and the colours/resolution too. The monitor or graphics card is struggling a little.

You may need a new monitor though. But try tweaking them settings first.

Fuzziness is often caused by the focus gun on the monitor being out of alignment which can't be adjusted- years ago monitors had a focus button you could adjust to correct this but not now! Progress eh?

Sounds like a fault which tweaking the refreash rate / colours won't help - have a look at the monitor setting (on the monitor menu rather than the PC) if there is a color temp setting try adjusting this it may help otherwise it sounds like a new monitor I'm afraid.
