The Civilization III Hall of Fame has been around for quite a while now, more than long enough that threads of great insight and wisdom have sunk into the abyss where 'newer' posters might never see them. We should create an index, an Academy of sorts.

So which threads do you think should be listed?

I'll start with a safe pick: SirPleb, Going for Sid

Does anyone have a link to the post on use of LOngevity in a milk game?

Also - is it better to go for more territory (and thus have a lot of coastal cities whose influence extends into the ocean) or minimize your coastal cities so as to have as much population as possible?

This thread started by SirPleb contains his analysis of Civ3 scoring. In it he talks about Longevity and sea tiles. While I think there could be more analysis and testing done on the usefulness of sea tiles, this would be the starting point. (If I ever do another milk run, I will do my own analysis on tile selection and other scoring factors.) SirPleb also links to a few other threads started back in the day about Civ3 scoring and related utilities.

Since I am in this thread again, I thought that I would link a thread that I was recently directed to by AlanH over at GOTM. Here is the thread I started, which led to the more useful thread that talked about forestry and later about functional city naming. The pictures for forest chops are very useful, so I'll link them directly. One numbers the squares and the other gives each a unique character.

That's where SirPleb did the math, although IIRC it was actually EMan that told me Longevity was a bad idea once maxed out.

Coastal city layout is traditionally a tricky part of milking. The "free" food tiles are tempting, but sticking to land as much as possible is a good idea.

Is there a place that answers, or can someone answer:
is it better to have a lot of towns or less metros in the same amount of space to maximize score?

Milking is predominantly done on plains and grassland, which irrigated and railed (IIRC) respectively provide 3 and 4 food per tile, whereas city tiles are only 2 food. So more city tiles cut into the food supply>population>points.

If you want good ideas about placement, I'd check out the 2049/2050 saves of Moonsinger/SirPleb milk runs. Just keep in mind that they did do some city repositioning post conquest/pre milk. Most of those cities didn't start in those positions.

To elaborate on Slug's post, one thing I noticed is that the less you need a hospital the better off you are. Optimal city spacing doesnt matter unless you have pure grass around the city since you are most likely milking with an agricultural (3 food city tile) civ. If you can settle on a plains or worse food tile then do so.

I think I have to agree with killercane, based on my one milk game. Even on chieftain, corrupt large cities didn't get totally happy without cathedrals or a bunch of clowns. I don't know if I could have fit 512 cities on my standard map, but I figure I would have ended up with a better overall score that way, to say nothing of less pollution, thus less work.
