Naming Areas on the Map

I like the idea of being able to see remnants of other civilizations in the form of monuments when you are out exploring. I mean, you'd think if you were only 50 km away from a city , you'd see enough evidence of humanity around to at least know in which direction to find them!

As for physical features, I really don't care how they get named as long as they have some kind of moniker attached to them. If the game wanted to just name them based on a city nearby (e.g. Berlin river, Persepolis mountains), I'd be fine, as long as my advisor could tell me where barbarians are without making reference to some city 15 tiles away....

A VERY COOL IDEA INDEED!

Yet, I have a feeling they wont include it in Civ4...

It would be real cool though..

I dont think people would bother to name areas in a MP game.

But I definitely like this idea implemented in SP games

Clearly the thread originator did not play SMAC ;). But its a great idea and its a pity this concept is missing from all Civs.

I am totally in favor of labels and Rambuchan's monuments.

You should be allowed to toggle these information which is based on a menu in which you can flag which civs and whose battles and accomplishments you want to view on the larger map. For instance, say you just want to see the battles fought and won by the Romans, you could flag Romans and battles.

Also, the establishment of a label, marker, or monument should be auto-dated so you know when it occured--for sentimental reasons.

And you should be allowed to see a list of who fought in the battle which has been given a monument. Battles could be distinguished from each other by turn and by proximity. So if five attackers beat seven defenders, then clicking on the battle-memorial marker could pop-up a list of the units that were involved, the date the battle raged on, and a stat line showing the outcome.

But don't have a cow if you don't like these suggestions; Civ3 has been a bland experience and I would like to have a more involving experience the next go-around.:)

Yes, definitely a good idea that worked well in Smac.

I don't know about single player but in multi it could be very useful for planning offensives with an ally or dividing territory for settlement, etc...

Maybe it will be possible to mod that if its not included in Civ4?
