Who remembers the boardgames Broadsides, Jutland and Midway. These were set in US Revolutionary War, WWI, and WWI respectively. Oh yeah we had Carrier Strike as well. Another WWII. All great fun:)

 But there haven't been many good computer naval sims have there? Whaddya reckon? I had Warships for the C-64 which was fun in 1987. Silent Service came to my C-64 and then later on the PC, not bad.

Has anyone played/ enjoyed that newish one, from SSI. Fogot the name:rolleyes: - oh yeah its Fighting Steel

You forgot "Wooden Ships and Iron Men"... Or Bismarck? The list goes on and on...

But there are NO good computer games with naval combat... I guess the genre isn't marketable..:(

BTW, Broadsides was the only game of its kind (Axis&Allies, Fortress America) that was worth a damn IMO.

It still wasn't great, but the minis were cool...

I forgot War at Sea - that was an excellent boardgame as well. My Dad used to play all these solo, and then he hit on an idea! :goodjob: Ha - I'll teach my 8 yo son to play!

Pirates would have to be the best of the computer games that included naval combat (albeit very basic). The role-playing in it was a LOT of fun. Ahoy me scurvies, lets set sail for the Spanish Main:ninja:

There was some sort of Man-o-War game out recently, 3-D that had some promise, but it lost something in translation.

And there was a surface-to-surface WWII game out recently, anyone remember that? Ship to ship gunnery, several scenarios around Guadalcanal I was going to get it, but my computer wasn't up to it, and then started to hear bad reviews about bugginess and so on.

Yearning for a decent naval sim. Just think, with all of the work they've done on kaka with Star Trek, how easy it would be to modify the base a little to have a decent Battle of Midway bridge simulator (Capt. Browning strutting around in his leather windbreaker, shouting "pilots, man your planes") or a twilight hunt for the Scharnhorst.

That was actually the one I cared for least. Axis&Allies is my favorite. After that, All of them were good for some diversion, though I particullarly liked the Roman one.

I hated axis and allies, if only for the fact that the only battle that REALLY matter was the one in Russia (Kinda like the real war huh?).

Richard is right on the money about the Star Trek stuff. But game developers probably see little use in putting out a game in a market that is regretably small.

Maybe somebody can help me here, I had a game once upon a time that recreated the ENTIRE battle of the Atlantic. It was on an old IBM 386. It was a RTS game where battles could happen without you doing anything, or you could get onto the individual ships.

The English pulled convoy duty, and it went down to destroyers. (A TON of ships) Repairs took forever, and it was a blast.

If I could find it again, I would definitely buy/steal/d-load it!:D

Anyone know what it was?

I hated Axis and Allies because, like War at Sea, it was just a dice-rolling contest. And there was no incentive to manuever, so you ended up with 500,000 units stacked in Mocow, 500,000 units stacked in Karelia, and a whole bunch of nervous kids watching and waiting...

I'm sitting in an Internet Cafe, stopping to czech things out after dinner, and four guys are playing "Global Ops" (fine graphics!) beside me. And it made me thing, you know what would be REALLY cool would be an online sub/convoy simulator where players could be destroyers or corvettes in the convoy, or part of a wolfpack operating together....

They already have a game like that, but it requires 2 games, and I have not heard anything good about it.

I still want to know what the name of that cursed Atlantic game is!!!

Coulda been "Battle of the Atlantic":p sounds kinda catchy.
I've got this War in the Pacific game, which I had heard was good. But I don't know whose got time to actually play it. I tried it a couple of times, and the game just started with the first turns moves, like Pearl Harbour I think, which took FOREVER to exexcute. So much so that i voted with my RESET button. Still nobody out there seen Fighting Steel?

War at Sea did involve a fair amount of luck, but it also required a careful appraisal of your available resources (both air and surface), and your neighbours. Then you had to deploy your ships/ planes in the sea areas you felt you could live in. All in all it created a terrific atmosphere of grand-scale naval strategy in a very simple to use package.

I had the General varient that combined Victory in the Pacific and War at sea. It was a blast, and the poor English would take a beating as they continuously had to send ships to the Pacific to get sunk in the early rounds (Repulse or POW anyone?:)) It had the U.S. map, which had the Carribean and a few other sea areas. I started playing War at Sea when I was around 8 or 9, so it still (even with an annoying amount of luck) is one of my faves...

Fighting Steel? Never heard of it... Off to Google now!

Fighting Steel was the head-to-head big iron game I was talking about above, WWII surface ships. Let me know how your search turned out, will you? Did it have actual online/LAN capabilities? Because, with over a gig of raw power, I might finally be ready for the challenge...

Looked into it, and was not really impressed... The reviews were fairly awful, even though the game isn't so big...

But...

I found the game I was discussing earlier: Great Naval Battles 1

Just fought a fictional battle between Bismarck and Prince of Wales. I tried to save her using some overzealous flood control, but fate just wants the Bismarck to go under...:D

P.S. My gunners sucked!

*heaven*:crazyeye:

P.S. Richard, do you have a messenger service? If you get one, drop me a line.

Here I am, Captain of the H.M.S. Glowworm, getting my a$$ kicked by the Admiral Hipper off of Iceland! Lone destroyer on the high seas!

Notice my rear turrets are shot up already, and I am desperately trying to get another torpedo shot off...

But alas, the greater firepower sends me to the bottom of the icy seas...

The cruiser Sheffeld exacts revenge upon the Hipper for her transgressions!

And the Jamaica sinks her destroyer escorts!

Admiral Fox, somewhere off the coast of Iceland!

Saw the Destroyer Command game yesterday. Yes, you have to play with someone playing Silent Service.

Wow - is that ...? Looks like fun. Whats the career mode like - thats alway key in a game like that. Ah, I only did it for the promotions and medals. Aarrgh the dame magnets:queen:  :soldier:

Aha we won the cricket - the old enemy England defeated
:sheep:

Is that a challenge, Adamski?

My problem is that I'm nervous about compatability - the Destroyer Command game looks cool, but it's not prepped for XP, and I haven't tried any non-XP games on my system to see if there are issues yet. And to be honest, I'm more of a sub guy than a surface guy.

But I'm prepared to try if the target is right!

Aaaooogha! Aoooogha!

Back in the day my favorite naval game was Aces of the Deep.

It must have come out about 6 yrs ago. It puts you in the role of U-boat commander and you can do a mission at any time during the war, or make a career. Like in the war it's not hard to be successful early on, but then the Allies gradually get their act together with radar, planes, more escorts etc and things turn nasty.

Maybe the sound was what made it. I still remember all those nights sitting and listening to pinging sonar of the destroyer overhead, the thrumming propellors, depth charges hitting the water, etc. How fun it was to glide up to periscope depth, let loose a few torpedos, and dive again. :)

Sigh ..... i miss that.
