I always thought that establishing embassies and gold were useless, but as it turns out a lot of people use them... So in the beginning of a game should you be obtaining some gold and not having science at 100% to prepare to spy on the enemy? Currently, I play Regent level.

I usually obtain gold in trades or from goody huts, and I use that for the embassies.

Also, at the end of a research project, I lower the SCI slider to prevent overrun waste.

(say, a project costs 100 beakers to complete, and you generate 24 beakers per turn, then you can run 100% SCI for 4 turns, and the 5th turn you only need 4 more beakers, wasting 20, so that last turn you can safely set the SCI slider to 20% and still get the tech in 1 more turn plus 20 gold)

If you decide you need to spy on the capital, (for example, you ant to know if you can complete a wonder) and you are low on gold, then by all means, lower the SCI slider to 0% for a turn or two.

What I wouldn't do though, is collecting gold for no clear purpose, at the cost of research time.

The domestic advisor screen.....F1. You can also get a detailed report of city outputs of gold, sheilds and food for each individual city in your empire. Useful for deciding where you want to build Copernicus Observatory or Newtons University for instance.

make your topic titles more specific than "need advice...."

How can you tell how many SCI beakers you are getting per turn?

Not really important to know exactly though, juts fiddle with the SCI slider when you are near the end of a research project.

If you can lower it without increasing the turns to get it, then do so.

OT: and I agree a more descriptive thread title is preferred. It makes browsing the forum easier.

i wouldn't say that spying on the capital is normally reason enough for me to pay for an embassy. i build them so that i can make rop and alliances.
