Update numero two: Still the same Prince game as before: 90.2 million people, 61 cities, 1782 ad, one turn per tech, Democracy, everything covered in farmland and railroads, luxeries jacked up for growth, impending war with moderetly strong germans, space ship production starts next turn.

I shift to Monarchy as soon as possible and then go on to Republic after I have Mike's Chapel and Democracy soon afterward. This way I have all the Important wonders and all advances coming in a couple of turns. Works very well too.

The only drawback with early Republic/Democracy is you pretty much can only fight defensive/diplomatic wars. But the increase in trade and the exponential internal growth is well worth the trade-off.

No way! the marginal difference in trade will not mean much when your opponents are toying with you by declaring war taking a city and then getting a peace treaty from your city. I'd rather be a strong militaristic empire

and then when I feel confident about my troops I switch to a Republic and then a Democracy.

Don't you find that if you delay going Republic/Democratic you suffer from the happiness penalty of having too many cities?

I've been having probs recently that if I don't go Rep quickly enough I run out of cash, but I am working on that one...

No if you get HG and the Oracle, the unhappiness because of too many cities becomes marginal and wont bother ou much.
