Parmenion
Warlord
I was recently empire building and minding my own business (huge continents map, regent level with all civs) when I was involved in a world war with 7 other civs! I am the Britons (my own mod) and have a largeish continent all to myself after exterminating the Bosch in 2500BC and am by far the most successful civ in the world. In about 1340 AD or thereabouts the other civs all got into the habit of sending roving units into my territory for no apparent reason. They would wander around stealing damsels and raping chickens but generally not doing any harm and would not declare war against me. I could understandably only put up with this for a few turns before asking them to leave, at which point they declare war against me, despite them having a polite or cautious attitude towards me, and the fact that Ive never reneged on a deal (that they know of). Their pathetic units of War chariots or pikemen were quickly crushed by my cavalry, and I increased my ironclad patrols round my continent to prevent any further landing attempts by galleys and caravels. Thus the war was fairly pointless. I had built Universal Suffrage and could thus last through a medium-length war without fear of war weariness, and I wasnt the least bit worried about losing territory or units as the only AI units worth worrying about were the Japanese Samurai and they werent one of the civs I was at war with.
After 24 turns of this I am now quite annoyed. No other enemy units have landed on my territory and yet no-one will recognise my ambassadors. 7 Civs are currently at war with me and are furious and they have signed embargoes against me with every other civ who is at peace with me (and I mean EVERY other civ). What I really want to know (after you have waded your way through the somewhat lengthy diatribe above) is why I am still able to trade with other civs even when they have an embargo against me. The deals are unfair (when are they ever fair?) but Im still able to do it so it made me wonder whether an embargo just makes it less likely that a civ will trade with me rather than not allowing them at all.
For example, the Americans were perfectly happy to trade Nationalism with me for a world map and 1500 gold, which seems to be a fairly reasonable price considering they were going back on a deal with the Aztecs not to trade with me.
So, my questions are:
1) Why am I loathed by everyone?
2) Why do they choose to initiate wars by making their worst troops wander aimlessly round my territory until I get mad at them?
3) How do embargoes really work?
4) Has anyone else had similar problems?
