Hi,
I'm new to the forum, but old to Civ... I had the pleasure of reviewing the original (on 5.25-inch floppies!) for the UK's PC Format magazine back in 1991 (I think). I have it in my loft somewhere!

Anyways, I've been playing far too much Civ IV (haven't we all?) and have been thinking about some things that I'd have liked to have been included in the game. I listed them on my blog http://sextoysinsider.com/random/10-things-id-like-to-see-in-civilization-iv/

Some of them are new techs (Sport), some are wonders (Panama Canal) and some are units (the Pervert!)... I was going to ask Sid to put them in a patch, but I've lost his phone number ;-)

I'd like to have a go at making them myself, but I'm not sure what's possible or where to start (an currently going through the tutorials forum - so much to read!). So if anyone has a quick pointer that would get me started it would be great... Is it possible to make new wonders and techs?

In the meantime, I'm off to check out those other forums!

Welcome to Civfanatics!
Sadly, Civ4 is a little more difficult to mod rather than Civ3. Anything is possible though :)

--I started out knowing completly nothing about the whole modding scene when I first joined these forums and now i'm on my way to being able to create my own little mods.

--To start off, what I did was browse these forms. Mostly starting out from the XML Tutorials here in the Tutorial section of these boards. I learnt how to edit all those XML files and started doing little edits here or there to get expierence.

--Once I got a full grasp of the XML world. I was able to venture out further into 3d and 2d graphics editing. I took some 3dsmax tutorials and learnt the whole process of creating units from 3dsmax. I just kept practicing and eventually got the hang of it. Photoshop I just learnt from experimenting with all the buttons and seeing what they do.

--After all that practice I got better and started to mod. It takes a while but is well worth it :)

--All I suggest is start practice, know that your going to get many errors along the way just like everyone else. Start of with the easy stuff like XML and then move on to the heavier stuff like python or SDK if your into coding or maybe some graphics editing if you like that.

--G'luck and know that you can always pm me if your stuck on somthing. I might be able to help out. If not, just post a new thread asking a question and some of the more expierienced modders can lend a helping hand.

Have fun modding :D !

Hi Splinter, thank you so much for the reply and encouragement.

Part of the problem is to persuade myself to stop playing long enough to get some serious reading done...

I've dabbled with XML before so that sounds like a great place to start, thank you.

Can you point me to some of the MODs you've done? (To inspire me!)

Thanks again,
Richard

-I havn't really completed any mods on my own yet. But I am working on a major WWII Mod. It isn't complete yet, but it'll get there.

-All I've really completed on my own are the units listed in my sig. But check around the site for some mods to use as references.
