I can't seem to find anything in the manual about this:

How do I use my cardinal and how do I use my merchant?

place merchants on resources ( silk, lumber, ect ) to generate trade income

Cardinals can preach on your lands to keep your religious % close to 100, preach on foriegn lands to increade chance of trouble there. Kill heritics, ect

just don't assassinate the pope like I did  tends to piss the people off

Thanks. I must be blind because I checked the manual when looking up something else and found stuff about it. For those also wondering the same, cardinals are always preaching and don't need to carry out a specific action each turn to do so.

My generals keep getting killed by an inquisitor... How can I improve the piety of my generals? He also murdered one of my priests which was raising catholicism :S

Also if the Pope dies, is one of the cardinals chosen to succeed him?

I don't think piety matters, but I believe your relation with the Pope affect how many inquisitors you get...erm, inquisiting.

When the Pope dies, all nations with cardinals get a chance to vote for one out of three potential replacements. Who you vote for will affect future relations with the new Pope (he doesn't like you if you didn't vote for him).

The manual says that a high piety reduces the chances of the inquisitor being successful.

What is the best way to make allies? My heir married a French princess (can't remember how I did that because I asked her - any ideas?). This made us allies but then France declared war on me. Now Scotland and Denmark have and no-one seems to want to be allies through trade. I won't have any more princesses for around 5 years.

My king has died so my previous heir is now the king. However the new heir is his younger brother rather than his son (who is 18 or 19). Shouldn't it go down the direct route?

How can increase the charm on my princesses?

I'm sure that ages are going more slowly than the years.

My faction leader, William the Conqueror died in 1140 in his 60s. That would make him born in the 1070s. Odd how he was alive and well in 1066...

His heir took to the throne in 1140 and was probably in his 30s. Now it's 1200 and he is 56 years old, even though he's been my leader for 60 years.

Is this a bug?

It does, but its difficult to gain piety with generals. Try keeping relations with the pope high and heresy low, in order of importance.

Ally with people that you share no borders with. Preferably nations you don't plan on attacking in the near future.

His son must have been underage when dad took the throne. The current system is not true hereditary rule.

Try trading maps/gaining trade agreements with other factions. Just like a diplomat.

No... 1 turn progresses the game 2 years and ages your general 6 months (its left over from RTW to prevent generals only living for 20 turns)

I can't seem to find anything in the manual about this:

Try sending your merchant to Timbuktu/Baghdad/America for valuble resources.

Thanks for clearing all that up :)

Oh another point: My princess married a family member of Milan. Since then she's disappeared from my tree. However the Milanese (this gets very confusing with the Malinese in Civ IV) general is now on my side. Surely she should still be on the tree as she's still married with the possibility of children?

This happened to me aswell... I think the new patch has mucked up general marrying. I know pre-patch they appeared on the family tree.

Unless it was downloaded automatically when I installed it, I don't have the patch...
