After crash landing on this planet and having lost most of their previous knowledge, the people that would be known as the New Union of Fanaticia began to plan what to do. After some initial exploration, a citizen named Civ1 Addict noticed what looked like a village in the distance and was named as the foreign minister for the group of settlers.

It was decided that a group of settlers led by Ren would approach the hut as he had a reputation as a geat military leader and hopefully he would be able to save the settlers if the villagers were hostile. At the same time the leader, Dell19 stayed with the first group of settlers who started building a great road.

After two turns they heard great news, Ren had arrived in the village and they had been so pleased that they had formed a HORSEMAN for us. At the same time the road was completed and everyone lived happily ever after...

I stopped here so that we can decide where to scount and where to settle, I plan to play some more turns on Monday morning.

Our empire: We currently have two settlers and a horseman.

And here is the saved game:

After looking at the top 5 cities screen it was found that we share our world with 4 known empires that call themselves the Russians, the Spanish, the Greeks and the Indians.

Here is a screenshot of our empire.

A horseman, great! One point, when I loaded the game I noticed it said "Mr. President of The New United Fantica" but we are the New Union of Fanatica? A mistake or does nobody care?

I, too, am unable to download - I am told that it is not a valid saved game file?

Well, the screenshot shows all there is to see for now, so don't worry about the .sav file.
I guess now we'll start exploring, then?

Too bad I can't view the .sav file:( Was it played in MGE?

Classic, I think. If you have MGE you should be able to view it, I think.

What version of Civ 2 are you using

Use:

GAME ---> GAME OPTIONS

The exact version and patch is listed at th top of the pop-up options window.

:)

You are definitely using MGE, btw.

That said, the game was created in Classic, 2.42 by Smash. All versions of Civ can read 2.42, and the game should be played in 2.42 only.... otherwise all the 2.42, 2.62, and 2.78 people are locked out, now and in the future.

Just make a copy of your Civ2 directory, and apply Cedric Greene's patch to it . Then you can run 2.42.

I suggest this:

1. Install 2.42 (via patch).

2. Replay the 2 turns, and obtain the exact outcome (e.g., same 2 moves, and a horseman).

Notes:
- Future Presidents should continue to play in 2.42 format so anyone can download and see the .SAVs. Version 2.62 and 2.78 can also be read by 2.42.

Civ 2 Versions:

2.42 - Classic
2.62 - Fantastic Worlds (FW)
2.78 - Conflicts in Civilization (CiC)
5.4.0f - Multiplyer Gold Edition (MGE)
ToT Patch 1
Macintosh ??

2.42, 2.62, and 2.78 have the same file format; MGE will alter the file permanantly, rendering the .SAV useless for 2.78 and lower.

:)

I was hoping that since the game was already in 2.42 that it would stay in 2.42. Btw I have Test of Time and ran the patch to turn it into MGE. Well I'll try to get it to work.

ToT can read all formats, but unfortunately, ToT does not allow a save to 2.42/2.62 format. :(

You can downgrade a copy of the 5.4.0f (MGE) install to 2.42/2.62. Actually, that's why I had to downgrade, too... to be able to play and exchange games with other Civ 2 Players.

Future Presidents should keep in mind they need to save in the 2.42/2.62 (Classic) format, too (or maybe pass the game to be played to the V.P. to do the moves).

The bonus is that with your 2.42 install working, you will be universally compatible, and can easily join any game (like Successions, e.g.).

:)

Exploring is a matter for the foreign adviser so I will leave the polls to Heliobagus, but some thoughts are:

  • Looking at the hut/specials map, the best way to ID our location is to head one space north east onto the plains. There is a 5/10 chance of a special north-east of that square.
If there IS a special, then two moves east then south-east will narrow down the configuration further - a 3/5 chance of a further special due south of that point.
If there is no special after the first move, then the same moves 2 & 3 will ID another possible special site with a 2/10 chance.
Finally there is a 2/10 chance of finding no specials.
I'll post a poll this evening on settlement. We obviously lack detailed knowledge of where we are, but need to decide whether to go ahead and found a capital anyway, and (if so) where?
I can see four options:
1 - settler 1 founding 1 space n-w of current position
2 - settler 1 founding 1 space s-e of current position
In either case, settler 2 moves 1 space s-w to build a further stretch of highway.
3 - settler two moves one space due south - if the spot is conducive to settlement, founds capital. Settler 1 moves 1 space e to build a second length of the road. Note this would mean our capital has a 9/10 chance of 1 special and a 1/10 chance of none.
4 - settler 1 moves n, settler 2 moves s, extending our knowledge of our surroundings and waiting for the horseman to ID any better founding sights.

Are there any other options that need including?

Are we permitted to use the Location / land mass exploit thingy to determine whether that little square of land just visible in the south is on the same continent or not, or is that outside the spirit of this demo game? (not that this is really vital info anyway...) :)

I'd prefer not to. I can't remember at this time whether that little loophole is allowed in the GotM, but if not then we definitely shouldn't use it. Even if it is allowed then I'm not very keen on using it here as it is a bit sneaky, if not considered outright cheating. Besides, we can explore it within a few turns can we not? :)
