Hi there,

I know what Pinch means in game as far as mechanics are concerned, but I've tried to find reference to it in real world tactics on this site and elsewhere with no luck. Terms like Charge and Shock I am more familiar with.
What might the developers have been referring to with this term as far as real world tactics versus gunpowder units?

Thanks for any insight.

I believe pinching means cutting off supplies to gunpowder units therefor robbing them of valuable ammunition to fight with.

It refers to sexual harrasment...

This is my weapon
This is my gun
This is for fighting
This is for fun

and of depriving a poor infantryman of his gun...

Isn't there something called "pinched down" where the soldiers basically are forced to stick to the ground to defend themselves. Making it hard to advance or do anything offensively?

If I'm not mistaken this is actually referring to the advent of percussion caps over basic flintlocks. Unfortunately all my Sharpe novels are boxed away so I can't verify that. I'll try and dig out the Companion tome at some point and have a look.

I for one think it refers to a pincer maneuver, or double envelopment...

those predate gunpowder by a good margin, but the names of the anti-x promotions generally make little sense.

Cool. thanks for the responses (even the sexual harassment one )
I can look into some of these references in greater detail

I wondered about this, too. My conclusions was that it's just some generic-sounding battle maneuver, just like all the other anti-x promotions. None of them really make any sense except for Cover.

What I do remember is the whole concept of bite, pinch, pour, spit, tap, shoot. The pinch there being the pinch of powder kept back to prime the pan that the flint hits to fire the gun. But I don't believe that's it at all.

Judging from the icon, it ought to be called not "pinch" but "punch". And like most of the situational promotions it's virtually useless in attack unless you're facing a single unit of the appropriate type or a stack containing no other types.

Interestingly, the shock promotion works equally well against Axes, Swords, and Spears, and I, for one, would rather have a 25% bonus, than simply another 10% from Combat Two, on my Horse Archers (for example).

The ambush and cross-fire concept make sense; though my initial thought was more of a "rush" where you try and get in to hand-to-hand combat with the person holding the gun so they cannot continue to use it to shoot at you from a distance. Since it is only effective AGAINST gunpowder units and not FOR gunpowder units (at least, not specifically).

Sorry but that doesn't hold a lot of water with me. That's merely being able to identify chokeholds which certainly is nothing new. You could accomplish the same thing with any missile weaponry. Hell it's possible with melee weapons. Remember this is a very specific promo; Only available to Mounted, Gunpowder, Armored, Helicopter, Air and giving +25% vs. Gunpowder Units and only available with the advent of gunpowder.

The developers thought it sounded cool, and used it like the other phrases for the "Counter" promos. Like only Tanks get "Ambushed". :)
