Play by Email Co-op and Online

Does anyone know if you can do co-op play by email? And if you can change a play by email game into an online game and vice versa?

What I'm getting at is that I have a friend in another state and we'll probably do play by email games, but it would be cool if, when we have time available, we can turn our play by email game into an online game for a few hours and then change it back to a play by email game so we can keep playing the same game.

We both like epic games, and having the ability to do co-op play by email and the ability to go from play by email to online and back to play by email would make it more fun for us.

In the movie recently i think it said something about being able to switch between PBEM and server games. And co-op is alowed in server games so i imagine it must be in PBEM as well.
