Playing the SMAC demo, got a question

It seems that while playing the demo, I'll be moving a troop to a certain location on the map, he'll get part way there, then stop. If I click on him and cancel his orders, then tell him to go to that location again, he'll go.

Why does the troop stop? Is this something goofy with the demo?

No, that's intended behavior. Troops en route stop their movement under certain conditions, e.g. when they see enemy units, or friendly units. These settings can be specified in the options screen.
