Gentlemen,

I have heard of this defensive bonus to military units defending from within a city against an attacker launching an attack from across a river. I take it that this is because the attackers have to wade across the river to get to their destination. However, with the advent of Engineering bridges have now come into play and river crossings will not even cost an extra point of movement. Therefore, will river-crossing wars at post-Engineering eras still give defense bonuses to the defending units?

Yes, the river defense bonus remains in effect throughout the game.

I do not believe that the river defense bonus applies to bombardment attacks across a river (but that is just my logical guess and not a result of testing).

Remember that you cannot gain most of the benefit from the roads and bridges that belong to your enemy if you are in his territory without a ROP in place.

Yes because the roads in question are not your roads. (yet ;) )Also, if all your guys are lined up on a bridge and marching across, the best plan of defense would be to defend on the other side of the bridge where there is a bottleneck. Of course that is reality....
