Just wondering for a slight bit of advice on the best army combination i normally play as the vikings and just fill it with besercks but due to there resonably poor defence they dont last too long, would it be more benificial to stick some pikeman in there or somthing with a bit more defensive prescence??? :confused:

Depends what you want the army for.
You can have an army of 4 pikemen defending or an offensive army of 4 berserks which will be amphibious.

You mustn't load different unit types in an army because you lose the added bonus. All units must be the same in an Army to gain maximum bonus.

Basic of Armies:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=99688&page=1

Say for example you have cavalry. A normal cavalry unit has A/D/M of 6/3/3. You already have the pentagon (allows a fourth unit to be loaded in the army) and the military academy (allows added bonuses). ADDED BONUS:

1) attack= 6+6+6+6/4= 6
2) defense= 3+3+3+3/4=3
3) movement= +1

The added bonus of the military academy then means you now have an army of four cavalry which has:

attack= 6+6= 12
defense= 3+3= 6
movement= 3+1= 4

So your army of 4 cavalry has now A/D/M of 12/6/4 which is close to the A/D/M of a second world war tank.

This added bonus wouldn't have been possible If you load the army with different unit types. All three or four must be the same and a military academy built to have these bonuses.

People tend to forget that the military academy is useful for two reasons:

1) It builds armies
2) It gives all existing and new armies the bonuses mentioned provided all units loaded in an army are the same type.

I am not fond of mixing units in an army. The exception is once you get the Pentagon. Now I will add in a mix unit. Say if I had some AA armies of AC or even horses, I could add in Calvs. If the army was strickly a baby sitter, I would add in my best defender (rifle/inf).

A very early army may be mixed as I may not have any choice, due to the limited units at the time. At least do not add slower speed units, so no 1 move to an army of 2 movers.

My suggestion would be to not leave them sitting around to be counterattacked once they've taken significant damage. Pull them back and let 'em heal. Or keep a couple of defensive units stacked with them.
