Question about research tree

depending on what level you play, and what is the size of the map(this decides how many cities you have).

I was trying to say that it is not a critical issue where you are in your technology tree. I think it is more important to know where you are compared to AI players, or other human players.

If you only build military units when you run out of improvements:
You better be a full era ahead.

If you build 2 military units per city:
Try to stay at least equal.

If you build nothing but military and some infrastructre to build more military:
A half era behind is no problem.

i think it's obvious this guy is a beginner on chieften so if you were on a standard size map, roughly equal no. of cities with A.I, more of a builder than a warmonger (most beginners are), you should be about 1/2 an era ahead. if your equal or behind on chieften then you might want to raze your tech spending a bit, or build more science stuff.

Yup that's what I think too,
if I'll don't care about my military (on the easiest level), I'll have republic in about 200-100 B.C., and that's the first thing I'm heading for - a few turns later I'm in the Middle Ages, about at 200 or 300 A.D.

It also depends how many AI's you have, as they tend to quickly exchange techs, which often keeps you behind, if you do not make the propper contacts and tech trades...
The more AI's you have, the more they exchange techs, and the more they are ahead of you (especially for higher levels)

I regularly play Russia - if you are on contients or pangea on a standard or larger map you should be first out of the ancient era.
On average I research 3 techs and trade a few and find the rest.
How many scouts do you create? The first thing I do is build an additional 2.

The massive barbarian uprising is triggered when the 2nd Civ gets out of the ancient era.

There are 2 stragegys you can use
1) keep all the useful techs to yourself - good for military,
economic and cultural superioritory
2) trade or give away techs - good for the whole world - all civs
can aid in technological progress

Using 2nd strategy you and all other civs will be much more tech advanced than under strategy 2. This is good if you aim to complete the spaceship or UN in the shortest possible time.

It also promotes world peace which is good for the OCC.
