Culture points and beakers can be used to do "research and development" in a product, which, when successful, can be traded to make money.

There are two types of products available for development. One is cultural products such as hit albums, movies, and silk clothing. The other is technological products such as cars, and iphones. Cultural products are researched with cultural points, and technological products are researched with beakers.

Lets say I am playing as China, and I have just discovered a technology. I have the option of investing my beakers for the next few turns to work on researching new technologies. Alternatively, I can invest the same beakers into developing some kind of technological products.

When a product is successfully completed, trader units will begin to sell these products in all cities all over the world. These trader units will work much like missionaries. Where missionaries spread their faith in the cities they go to, trader units will also sell the products in the cities of their destination. In another word, trader units now have two functions. THe first function is to establish generic trade routes. The second function is to sell the products that its civilization has developed.

The products, when successfully developed and sold within my cities, will yield certain kind of benefit. The first benefit is always going to be increased gold revenues. The second benefit will depend on the particularity of the product. A product like iPhone may increase amenities and cultural points generation in the city. A product like laptop might increase beakers generation in that city.

The product, when sold to other city states and civs, will generate a much bigger revenue than when sold within my boarder. But the same product will also bring benefit to that civ. For example, if I sold iPhone to a rival civ's city, I will get a much bigger gold revenue per turn than if the trader was establish a generic trade route. But that importing city will also receives the benefit of increased amenities and cultural points generation.

Diplomacy will be affected as now there will be negotiations carried out to open or close access to markets.

The products available for research and development can be generated by game designers. When one product is successfully developed, no other Civ in the world will be able to research it anymore. Some, but not all, products should preferably have an expiration date and expiration is determined by technology. A horse drawn carriage product is made obsolete by automobiles, for example.
