rival nations commit suicide

I recently bought and downloaded civilization 3 complete edition from STEAM but i've been having trouble when i wage wars against other nations. As soon as I engage another civilization and conquer one of their cities they immediately raze all of their remaining cities except their capital and disband almost all of their combat units. It completely ruins the game by basically winning the wars for me and is extremely aggrivating. I've re-installed, checked for patches, re-started multiple games with different nations and setting and i have no mods. nothing seems to work. Has anybody else had this problem and if so how did you fix it?!

Umm...sounds like you have the Mass Regicide option checked as a Victory Condition when you start a new game. That option (I think it is that one) means that when you capture a city you kill that civ.

I would suggest that you only have checked these victory conditions:

Conquest
Domination
Cultural
Space
Diplomatic
One Cultural City (20K culture points)

Sounds like a combination of Elimination and Respawn.

As CBob says, check which conditions are enabled in the game startup screen.

I would suggest that you only have checked this victory condition:

- Conquest
