If you are a map snob like me you know the importance of a good map, as opposed to Firaxis productions, one that does not sacrifice too much realism for the sake of gameplay.

Some in the community have already made some spectacular maps of Europe, specifically Uncopain's here http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=156846, so if that is your desire this is not for you. This maps area is fairly limited to the regions into which the Roman Empire would expand, with a couple exceptions, and is more suited for modding or a scenario.

This is just the basic map, water, land, rivers. No forest is placed, no resources placed. It is the WB save, it is not ready to play. You will need to make more adjustments to the map and setup desired players/locations, etc.

Map size is 150X50

Open the bmp below for a screen of minimap

If some features appear a bit off to you keep in mind that the map has been shifted a few degrees counterclockwise in order to show the areas desired and eliminate unwanted portions. Features such as rivers that you may be used to seeing run straight up and down may be cocked to teh side somewhat.

Many thanks to Rhye for his tutorial on converting bmp's to WBS, didn't use the Terrain or Feature functions but it really saved time and helped get the landmass done quick. You can find this great utility and walkthrough of how to use here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=135740

I think you did a really good job!

Are you planning on making a Rome modpack/scenario? If you are I'd like to help.

The scenarios that came with Civ 4 and Warlords are pretty lame.

More units are needed however to add some flavour and realism. The religions and civics in Civ 4 would add wonders to a Rome mod. I made Rome mods in Civ 2 and Civ 3, but then I got hooked on RTW. But RTW is rubbish from an economic/empire building point of view. I wonder what would be the best approach to add people to Civ 4 like those in RTW. Randomly spawned units that hang around for like 60 years or summin? Jesus, the possibilities are endless...I better f*ckin learn to start modding!!!

It would be a dream game to have the battle mechanics and map movement system of RTW combined with the depth of the civ series economy/building.
Civ has tried to rip off a few of RTW's features like the camp unit for roving nomads in warlords but warfare has always been civ's weakness. I guess we can always hope for civ5 to do better...

I am gonna put something together with this map. At least a better Rise of Rome scenario for sure. I would like to do more in depth changes than just techs, civs, etc. but thye have made it pretty complex to do any modding and I am not one of the idle rich with time to burn. I spent the last few hours just figuring out how to run 24 civs on the map and get the files so it would work correctly. That is just the 24 civs, now I have to change all the civs art and text in xml so it uses the civs I want for the scenario. Someone else will have a better deal out sooner than I will I am sure. Mostly I am just taking some of the ideas from the vanilla and warlords scenarios and putting them in. The tech tree has got to be redone though for sure, Legionaire 4? Horse Archer 2? come on that is ********, almost as stupid as the RTW levels of building improvements.

hello,

this maps looks awesome, the ankle is perfect the shapes are really nice i did not check the resource placement, yet.

I have one question, may i please talk you in extending the map 10 squares to the east to include Persia ? As you know Persia was quite a headache for the Roman Empire, but on this map they are missing most of their homelands ...

thank you lot, if you consider this
