In March Microsoft posted Safedisc Windows XP Fix for Microsoft Games.
When running a restricted user account with fast user switching under Windows XP, some games will not start correctly. The game requests that the original disk be placed in the drive, even if it is already present. To remedy this issue, download and run this fix.
This software will change the startup state of the system component needed to start your game from start on demand (on game load), to start at boot (on Windows XP start).
The page's title specifies "Microsoft games" but all other references in the page just refer to "games" ... perhaps this can resolve some folks' difficulties with Civilization IV. As I understand it, Safedisc is the copy protection program used on the Civilization IV media.
If anyone knows for certain that it's just effective with MS games, please post. It's not an issue I had to work through on my rig.
