Is there any way to save shield that would otherwise be lost?

For example, assume you are building a wonder, and someone else beats you to it, is there any way of just saving the shields until the next wonder comes along, or would you have to switch it to another city improvemnet and take the large production hit?

Switch to the Palace, it is very expensive when you have lots of cities.

Assuming that the palace would be built in 1 turn, is it worth building the palace?

No, he's saying to switch to palace to hoard the shields until the next wonder becomes available. If you have alot of cities, the palace would be very expensive, so you wouldn't likely complete it before another wonder became available.

But in your case, it looks like you will complete the palace before a wonder will be available. Can you assign all of the citizens in that city as entertainers/specialists (starve the city, so you only produce 1 shield/turn) to delay completion of the palace until the next wonder becomes available? If not, then I would build the palace only if it is a better location for it for corruption purposes. Otherwise, try and use those shields for a small wonder, or whatever is the most expensive improvement you can build.

Well, it could be an idea for new patches to include a new building called "storage pit" that would act somewhat like a granary, but for shields, thus saving the shields lost from a production change.
It could upgrade to a bigger pit, etc... :)

Another technique in some situations is to switch between two high cost items, say the palace and Battlefield Medicine, when you are saving shields while waiting for another wonder enabling tech to come in.

If your Palace prebuild would finish befor the wonder you are waiting for, switch to Forbidden Palace and then back to Palace. You loose some shields, but still keep most. Repeat if necessary.
