I just finished a small milked game, chieftain level, and I decided for fun to abandon all cities and disband all units except for a settler and a worker, to see what happened. Anyway the score in 2049 was 2558, and here's the thing...I skipped the last turn for a conquest win and at the end game screens it said the final score was 2553, i.e. LESS that what it had been. Curiouser still, if I ~disband~ the settler in 2049, I get a conquest loss with a score of 2558.
A better score when you lose than when you win! go figure :crazyeye:

Remember, the score is the average score PER TURN..........so, if you disband all your cities it will bring your average score down! ;)

But what I don't understand is why winning seems to subtract points from the score I had amassed up to 2049...

Edit: Thanks guys. I guess I overlooked the fact that I was losing in 2049 not 2050

Up to 2049 (539 turns) you had kept an average of 2558. So the sum of your turn scores was close to 2558 = 1378762 / 539. Then you added a turn of close to 0. So with the extra turn played and little added to score you get 2553 = 1378762 / 540
