Selling Techs

Hello All,

I haven't played civ3 for a while. When I was playing a lot I used to like to spend a ton on science and sell my advances to other civs for money per turn. Now I can't seem to get any of them to go for it. Did one of the patches I installed make this strategy worthless, or am I just screwing up?

Thanks in advance!!!

it could be as simple... they might not have any money to spend.
The AI won't go for a gold per turn deal if they don't have a surplus. If they have 0 gold or very little this is most likely the case.
but it does seem to happen more often with the newest patch.

It works for me still. Of course, it depends on the era, tech, and wealth of the other civ/civs.

You can get hundreds of gpt for things like Electronics, Modern Armor, etc. But you'd be lucky to get 1 gpt for ancient techs, or from a poor, tiny country. As far as I know nothing has changed.

The only thing that has changed is you can't sell cities for outrageous amounts of gold. You can't sell them period.

I was thinking it didn't work anymore, too. But in recent games I've been able to sell stuff for hundreds of gold per turn. As someone pointed out, they have to have a surplus at the time of the deal. This usually occurs later in the game. Sometimes you can hit them up early if it's an isolated civ with no contacts, they may have a surplus built up.

The newest patch did change this strategy, for the better IMO. This was my old civ2 strategy. It still works but just isn't as dominating. I think one change was that instead of the AI researching faster, you research slower (at the harder difficulties). Also they make you pay more than they used to.

I also agree with RufRydyr.
