Semi-newbie GOTM questions...

Hey guys.

I'm a CIV III newbie... sort of. I played some a few years ago (not enough to get very good at the game) and then got too busy with kids and such. Now I have some more free time and wanted to start up again. Long story short I purchased the CIV III Complete version yesterday and installed it and all of the most recent patches. After skimming through all of the information in these awesome forums, I'm seeing that I can't play some of the GOTM's without altering my version of CIV III. That leads me to some questions that I couldn't find in the various threads. I'm sorry if they are clearly answered elsewhere. I'm also somewhat of a computer idiot, so feel free to flame me - in a nice way ;)

(1) If I download the GOTM modpack, will that make my version of CIV III Complete change? If so, is this really a bad thing?

(2) I see that Conquests isn't allowed for the GOTM's. Is there relatively quick explanation as to why this is?

(3) I'm wanting to get my skill set up and thought I'd play some of the past GOTM's. Are there any specific games that you guys would recommend that would be particularly helpful?

I think that's it for now. Thanks in advance for your help.

If you have CivIII complete you need no mod packs other than the patches (which aren't a mod pack).

The regular GOTM (Game of the Month) can be played with the Play the World executable in your Civ3 directory and the COTM (Conquest of the Month) can only be played with the Civ III Conquests executable.

The reason Conquests isn't allowed on the GOTM because some of the units were changed and it wouldn't be a level playing field. Hope this helps.

Any of the GOTM's are fine. They are a bit hard if you're not that good like me, but you might pick it right up..

I'll leave (1) and (3) to be answered by others, but the short answer to (2) is that you can use conquest to play the new COTM series, those are the games that start at the first of every month. The PTW/Vanilla civ games (now called 'Classic') are kept alive for those of us who don't have C3C, like playing PTW or Civ better or will never be able to play since they play on their Mac machines. Those are the games that start on the 15th of every month.

The only thing that will be affected is the basic (vanilla) Civ. If you have 'complete', then I suggest you play the PlayTheWorld version - you can play that unmodded with zero downloads required.

As Space pointed out, we have a separate conquests competition. The rules are just too different to make a comparable game to Civ/PTW for meaningful competition.

ANy of them. Why not start with a regent / monarch game, then move on to an emperor game before tackling deity? Make sure you read the spoiler threads to really learn to improve your game. :)

Greets Jallred350 ... I'm in the same boat, so I'm hoping there will be a response on this soon.

--- ooops - forgot to refresh, and there were 2 responses  . Thanks

wow - Space Oddity ... A name from the past ...

Well, I'm slowly trying to get back after a LOOONG NWN enforced hiatus. Man, feels like I am learning the game all over again.

Thanks to all for the comments.

I tried to do this last night, but when I opened the PTW exe file it asked for the PTW disk. I put in the PTW disk that I got with my CIV III complete package and it kept prompting me for the PTW disk.

Sorry if I'm being stupid here, but I couldn't get it to run. Thoughts/Suggestions?

I had this same problem one time. What I had to do is go to the PTW disc and manually copy the exec. over to the directory on the hard drive. I don't know why this happened because I didn't patch or anything else. Reading through the forums here, it seems to happen occasionally, but usually after patching. Although it happened to me without patching. and this solution worked for me.
