When Civilization IV first came out, my father bought it and we all (him, my brother, and I) installed it on our computers and would play over the LAN. If this is wrong or illegal I didn't know, but whatever. Recently (a couple months ago) something happened such that we were no longer able to play against each other with 1 disc over the LAN. The problem is that when one person creates a game, it is not visible to the other people on the network. I asked some people about it, and they told me that you can no longer play with 1 disc over a network, something about the developers wanting to make more money and having each player buy a game. I went to Best Buy and dropped $50 to buy my own copy, only to find that I still cannot play over my network. I tried direct IP and the connection keeps timing out. I tried internet and the connection keeps timing out. I went back to LAN and I still can't see games created over the network. I looked over these forums and opened up all the ports (like 13 of them) listed for me to open. Still no change. Can anyone help?

Did you install any new hardware around the time when the problem started appearing?

nope. i havent bought any new hardware in months. it was kind of a sudden thing.

about the firewall....i went to my network places>properties on my wireless network and it says that my firewalls are disabled on both computers. i turned off all virus software on both computers to see if that was blocking them. still didnt work. when one of the computers hosts a game online, it has a ping of 2500 rather than saying "Firewalled." are there other ways firewalls may be up? please list some ideas and how to fix them. operating system = windows xp and i meet all system requirements

Could be that your switch/hub is broken.. possibly the port where the PC that has the long ping times is plugged in.. or could also be the network card in one of the PCs

sounds like as good an explanation as any. however both computers can connect to other people over the internet, just not to each other. how would i fix this problem, if it is the case?

kdcs1, did you ever figure out the problem? I'm running into the same problem with my 2 copies of that game I bought for my wife and I.

As soon as Civ4 goes to the LAN screen XP disconnects both of us from our internal network.
