I can never find one. The closest thing I ever get is Queen Anne's Revenge from not Blackbeard (because... you know. Ugh.), which is a scripted ship, so not really a bragging right.

Also is there a significant difference between Large Frigates and SoLs?

I once had one fly past me when my completely blasted sloop was limping to the nearest town for repairs, but generally it's better to attack a country (other than Spain) until they send one as a pirate hunter. This takes a while, so be careful not to destroy their economy. That means attack fighting ships, not immigrants and transports. Perhaps lay off every other new governor as well. You need two top-end ships, one for the first attack, and one to deal with the inevitable pirate-hunter.

Regarding the difference between SotL and Large frigate, I don't find it that great. There's more of a difference between a non- and fully-upgraded frigate.

SotL carries 48 guns, and with hammocks carries 450 sailors!

Its a nice ship but i wasnt that overwhelmed by its performance. I got 3 actually

yepp, thats it!

SoLs have most cannons and crew capacity, but not much slower and agiler than any small ships. I can see no disadvantages in SoL and their advantages overweigh everything

in late game you only need one full SoL ship for being fast and capture almost everything, only very very few cities become such strong and wealthy to have over 500 soldiers. And if thats the case, you can always send some pirates in from pirates hideouts before land yourself into

You need Luck to find one

The Ship of the line can be found when you see "New Warship" from England, France and Holland
It is very rare
I have a saved game with one !

The Ship of the Line can be "Summoned". Play 1660 . Start your game at low difficulty. You can increase it each wealth share-out, if you like.

*Target all English ships in the St. Kitts/ Nevis / Antigua area. Try to capture or sink them. Don't blockade so closely that no ships come out of port, run a figure 8 around the islands if need be.

*Let the new governors and smugglers alone because they increase the wealth, and wealth seems to increase the chances of Ships of the Line being spawned.

At first the English will start escorting merchants, and sending Pirate hunters. Keep up the pressure.
They will start escorting with frigates, then you'll probably see a large frigate as an escort. It's great to capture it. What you don't want is a fleet full of broken down ships that move too slow to engage the Ship of the Line.

When it appears, it will look just like a frigate, but on a different scale. It will be labeled NEW WARSHIP. It will most likely be on the edge of your field of view ( maybe coming from or going to Barbados ) Remember, it carries 48 guns, and it takes a fair amount of punishment. You probably want to avoid trading broadsides with it. Rake it and board it, or dismast it so it surrenders.

Once you have your SOTL you can make it your flagship and go to port and share out the loot and play the game according to your priorities.

Or maybe you'd like to try for additional SOTL captures. If you can keep up the pressure, you will continue to see them. Good Luck!

Pick a non-spanish nation (No frigates from the Spaniards) then pound 'em till the bounty gets huge. Eventually they'll bring a SoTL out of a wealthy port.
