I am trying o search this forum for anyone who have played Sid Level Difficulty on Civ 3 before and won! (any map size and number of AI teams). But so far, I have not found any threads dealing on this subject. The best I could find was a few reports on Deity Level. Maybe there is something wrong with my search of no one has written on this subject before? Impossible to win on Sid level?

ack.
I started out editing my other post and accidentally pasted stuff into the quick reply instead of the editing window.

Thanks guys for all the detailed links! Really appreciate this!:):)

Anyway, instead of starting a new thread, I would like to continue by asking for further help.

I have just won my first Regent win (small map, Single continent, with one other AI player). But when I tried to play Monarch Difficulty level (with the same above settings), I was completely crushed!!!! Is this a big leap and quite a common situation? Where can I find threads dealing with playing on Monarch level? Is it possible to win against 7 (or more) other Civilizations before the time limit?

Thanks guys!

Sure, it's possible. I've only got about 10 games at Monarch, but I've done 9 dominations & 1 100k. The 100k finished in 1898, which is, what turn 400-ish? the dominations usually finish between 1600-1750, IIRC. These are standard maps, 7 opponents. I find the opening to be a little rocky still, & the transition from rapid expansion (REX)/initial war to later middle ages as well, but otherwise the game is just tough enough to be a workout & a learning experience. If I went to Emperor at this point, I'd struggle more than I'd learn, IMHO.

I don't know what went wrong with your game, but I'm guessing you didn't out-expand the AI or lacked critical resources or fell behind tech-wise and couldn't trade for them--all things that a larger map/more opponents would help cure. (Not the REX, perhaps, although a weak civ near you would give you ready-made cities once you went to war.) If you have a save or two, you could post them & more experienced players than I would be happy to give a brief critique.

Well, I played on a tiny map, Pangaea, with only one other civilization, the English. I think the mistake I made here is not producing enough settlers quickly! The English had about 10 cities and I had only 4 to 5! (can't remember the exact number and sorry, I don't have a save for this). Maybe it is because my mentality is still on Chieftain level? LOL.....

So, would it be easier to play with MORE civilizations, Standard map, Pangaea, on Monarch Level?

I will remember to post a save of my complete game next time on this forum but I have not tried this yet so I hope you understand. Lastly, I am aware that there is a thread on how to post your saved games on this forum somewhere here but I would really appreciate it if you could show me a link on how to this or even telling me here on this thread!

Thanks for replying mate!

:)

Monarch is certainly manageable. For me, the jump from Regent to Monarch was not as large as that from Monarch to Emperor.

Because of your comments regarding Sid, I'm presuming that you're playing C3C. In that version, the English are seafaring and commercial. If you want to play a seafaring nation, try an archipelago map instead.

Hit the War Academy. There are several articles on settler factories and the early game that might prove helpful.

. . . . So, would it be easier to play with MORE civilizations, Standard map, Pangaea, on Monarch Level?
I'm not entirely sure on the mechanics, I've read that changing the number of civs changes the number of resources that are likely to appear. As you're still learning the game, I suggest sticking with standard-sized map, standard number of opponents, until you've got your feet under you. As for landform, archipelago might cushion the transition to Monarch a little. The AI is notoriously bad at naval invasions. It also won't use suicide boats, so the human player can often take on the role of tech broker, earning quite a bit of cash with that.

You want to remember or realize that Regent is the level where the AI does not suffer a penalty compare to you. After that they get a bonus. At Monarch it is 10%. Not a lot, but things cost them 10% less to make, that is useful. They also start with 2 defensive and 1 offense extra units.

So they have 3 units before you found your capitol.
