Just installed SMAC on my laptop. Haven't played this game in ages, used to be a huge fan, but I'm having a bit of a problem.

When I used to play, I always used the keypad. However, this laptop doesn't have a "TRUE" keypad, it has one of the fake ones overlayed on the keyboard, and pushing the FN button and then one of the keypad buttons DOES NOT WORK under SMAC but works fine under windows.

Anyone out there have any suggestions for this problem?

I've had this situation before... it's not fun i agree...

But in general, I used a mouse to drag click go to commands... much slower i know...

I played hours and hours on a Toshiba Satellite, it had an option (Fn + F3 or F4 or one of those) to set the keypad semi-permanently to be recognized. The only problem I had was my wife telling me to stop playing and get to sleep every hour till dawn...

Use the mouse to get to menus and to drag units (even to the next square). After a while you'll forget you ever used keyboard :).

Takes longer though :(

Well I got used to it while I was on a laptop so I conpletely igonre the keyboard while playing :D.

Right, I also remember I did this when my fingers began to strike any key. Takes a little more time but in the long run feels relaxing

Use the arrow keys for the 4 cardinal directions (N, S, E, W), and then use Home for NW, Page Up for NE, Page Down for SE, and End for SW. I have a Toshiba satellite as well and this seems to work after a bit of practicing(I still make mistakes)

That's how I played Civ2 on my laptop (and still do). It also works on SMAC.
