SMAC vs Civ III

I think SMAC is definitely superior to Civ3 - it's possibly even superior to any of the Civ games. The only reason I play Civ more is because of the more familiar theme.

All the games in the franchise are excellent though. I've never been disappointed.

Does anyone else have difficulty knowing the difference in terrain?

You can right click on a terrain square to bring up a menu. Down towards the bottom, you'll see "info on this square." Click that and look in the lower left corner. You'll see, left to right, any units in the square, then a description of the square -- something like "rolling, rainy, xenofungus, 1357m." Click on the descriptive box and it'll show you the resource values, such as "nutrients 2, with farm 3, minerals 1, with mine 2, energy 2, with solar collector 3." (Don't quote me on these values for a rolling, rainy, fungus, 1357m square. It is intended merrely as an illustration, not as an accurate resource count.)

I'm playing SMAX (the Alien Crossfire Expansion). I do get the mineral and energy bonuses. The only bonus that is wiped out is the nutrient one.

Boreholes give you 6 mineral and 6 energy. The BONUS from the tile is negated.
