SMAC/X LAN play under OS X?

Since there is no SMAC/X forum I'll just post here.
When playing solo games, I just use the carbon versions posted here some time ago, no problem. However, for some LAN games I would like to play the classic version, since the carbon one does not support LAN playing.
Problem is, 90% of the time it just refuses to recognise my CD. When it does, it runs fine, but most of the time it just ask me to pop-in my CD when it's already in the drive; the strange thing is, I'm totaly unable to identify why it works some rare times and fail the rest.
Can anybody help?
Both computers are iMacs running OS X 10.2.4; one is a lowly iMac G3-450 with DVD drive, the other is a G4-700 iMac with a combo drive.

Classic mode is probably a bad idea when doing any type of LAN gaming, I suggest that you reboot to OS 9. As for recognizing the CD, that's probably a thing with classic mode as well. If it doesn't work in 9, then you have a larger issue.
