So what video cards actually work with this stupid game?

I ordered a 6600 GT today and also ordered more RAM for my computer. Amazing I'm spending almost $200 to play a $50 game. Hope it's all worth it.

I'm telling people here - this is absurd. There is obviously something very wrong with this game. People who think it's hardware don't know what they're talking about - this game was poorly designed and Firaxis should figure out a way to fix it and not force us to pay big bucks for new hardware.

upgrading hardwares is more like the "easy way out" for some people. I said some because even with the latest and best hardwares, people are still having problems. at the same time, upgrading from 512MB to 1GB of RAM has improved gameplay for many. It has been suggested that there are serious memory leaks within the game so having a large amount of RAM wont necessarily solve your problems.

Another easy way out is upgrading your video card, I upgraded from an GF FX5200 (2.5 yrs old) to a GF 6600, while I have noticed much better performance, I still get CTDs, though less frequent.

Basically what I'm trying to say is, at this point, with this current release, there are many issues that's causing the game to "demand" higher-end hardwares. I'm sure after a few patches or so, with the game being more "stream-lined", people who meet the minimum requirements (or at least the recommended) will be able to play the game and enjoy it. face it, a lot of people who bought the game are already playing and enjoying it. and I'm sure not all of the have the latest and best hardwares. So my advice would be to wait before spending more money on new hardwares. I did only because I havent done so since I built my system 2+ yrs ago and had some money left over from summer.

EDIT: wanted to mention that unless you know what your problems are, you shouldnt upgrade. Prior to the upgrades, I wasnt getting any "black terrains" or any errors. It was just slow. Upgrading will most likely NOT solve any of the serious problems. It will most likely cause you even more fruastrations.

I am not saying that. However, upgrading hardware will not hurt. It will in some cases minimize/reduce the problems. For example adding Ram will help with the memory leak.

It works okay with my Radeon 9600XT, running whatever driver version came out before 5.1. I get no ingame movies though, otherwise game won't load at all.

Mine's working fine now after I:
  • Updated my ATI drivers to the 5.11 CCC version
  • Installed MS .NET Framework 2.0
  • Set my audio in the game's speaker options to "System Configuration" instead of "Stereo"
I still consider it a ridiculous slideshow to pan around the map.
My system=AthlonXP 2800+, ASUS A7V600, Radeon 9800Pro/128 DVI, SyncMaster 191T LCD, TB Santa Cruz, 1GB PC2700 DDR, 200GB ATA, 40GB ATA, CD-RW, WinXP Pro SP2

Sapphire Radeon 9600 running the Omega Radeon Catalyst v2.5.97a (4.12) driver from 3dguru.com. Newer drivers (ATI or Omega) cause missing leader heads and pixelated wonder movies. This older driver runs perfectly for CivIV, but it causes lock-ups in City of Heroes (usually during combat).

Has anyone tried the Geforce 6200 512Mb at all? That's more within my price range than the 6600 GT. £100 vs £150 basically. That and I only have AGP 8x and PCI, the 6600 GT seems to only come in PCI-Express

I've got a GF6200 with 1G RAM. At first the only real problems were audio/video stutter, but the game worked fine. If the globe view resolution is set to med-high you get messed up blue streaks when in globe view, but in low it works fine. After I turned off the anti-aliasing in the game (0) my videos played smooth and now I like to watch them where as before I would just click them away. I'm using the 77.77 driver. I had one big crash using the 81.85 driver and then switched over. Other says the 77.89 driver works well, but I haven't tried it yet. Now the game works fine in med resolution and the graphics look fine without AA. :)
