Static on all music (Civ4 and Warlords)

Hi all,
I recently reinstalled Civ4/Warlords and I'm getting endless static on all my music, and even some of the sound effects (when I mute the music). Strangely, ths isn't an issue playing the Fall From Heaven 2 mod (only the opening menu has the problem, the ingame sounds are ok).

I'm using a plantronics headset, with its own sound processor, which is updated.

The sound in the opening cinematics works fine, but nothing else does.

Any thoughts?

Have you tried using a set of speakers or something just to make sure it's not your headset?

I don't have a set of speakers I can plug in. I've listened to the music and it works just fine if you play the .mp3 from windows explorer. Furthermore my headphones have no issues with any other sound in the history of my computer, ever. I'm inclined ot believe it's an issue with Civ4 I just don't know how to fix it
