If the AI is building the SOZ and I send a unit to pillage their ivory road - can they continue building it?

Reason I'm asking is that I tried that once before but a couple turns after I pillaged it, they still completed it anyway. And no, there was no other ivory available than what they were settled near (and not on). I'm not sure how that happened.

Same thing is happening now. I have a few military units nearby and I'm figuring they're building it now and I don't want them to have it. I would be willing to DOW them over it if I knew I could halt it by pillaging the ivory. If it wouldn't work - I won't bother emptying my units toward them.

I recommend letting them complete it, and then go take it. As long as you control the ivory, it won't produce ACs for them but it will for you, so there's not much risk and the AI just acts as a shield-farm for you.

Thanks.

That explains one thing - I remember a game not too long ago, I got a SGL and the Celts had a couple of ivories. I traded something with them for one and built the SOZ. The turn immediately after that, they DOW'd me.

In the game I'm currently playing, Only the Byzantines have ivory - two of them. I've already been at war with them, and gained a few cities in the peace deal. Once I linked those cities to my homeland, I was also linked to them. I then began trading with them for their spare ivory, then plopped down a city to cut their first ivory away from them.

They're building the SoZ for me, so as soon as it's completed, I'm cancellng the current ivory deal - if they don't cancel it first; after all, they are now trading me their only remaining ivory - and taking it off them. It's amazing how the AI is so stupid as to not notice my massive SoD amassing in my new ivory city, just three spaces from their capital. Then again, maybe they have, and they're hoping that if they keep the deal after the twenty turns I won't invade.

That goes for all wonders, improvements and units - if you lose the required resource, it can still be completed if you started building it when you still had the resource. But if you choose change production, then you can't change back.

One question relating to this, if you lose supply of Iron and Coal to cities with factories and / or coal plants do you maintain or lose production boost?

I remember having an Ironworks city that had a factory in it. Maybe 5-10 turns after finishing the iron works the coal moved. I do not remember shields dropping after that, so I believe once they're built you're good.

BTW... thats why I always start the Ironworks in a city as soon as I get a chance. I be pissed if I waited a couple of turns for to finish something else and a resource jump caused me to miss out on it.
