I would like to know what happens if I try to steal a technology (with a diplomat) in a PBEM-Game and it fails. Does my opponent get a message about it? Or is there automatially a declaration of war? Anything else that occurs then?

Hope there is people around here that have already experienced this and could share their knowledge with me. Thanks!

It is just like when an AI tries to steal a tech from you in a SP game, you can get a message if the diplomat/spy is caught red-handed, but up to you to declare war.
There is a pb with Civ3 here actually, it should ask you if you want to declare war immediately without reputation malus.
AI usually declare war, except when you are really powerful, they are gracious or your allies.

You can get a message or you always get a message? This never happened to me in a SP-Game, but it sounds reasonable that it should be the same in MP.

i was playing a 2 player with a mate and we found out afterwards that we both were endlessly trying to steal (>15 attempts), but no-one succeeded and no-one got a warning message (this was PTW btw), maybe we had a weird streak

In PBEM there is no message.

I consider it a matter of honour to tell the other player if I steal and fail, but then I play with people I know would do the same. :)

I tried it in a hotseat-game recently and also here the opponent did not get a message, when the mission failed. Thanks for clarifying this topic regarding PBEMs, too!

Now it would be interesting to know, if the chance of success was the same as in SP-Mode. Following zurichuk, one could conclude that it is more difficult to steal a technology successfully in MP-Mode.

Nope, I think it's the same. Can't be 100% sure though, althought it seems the same to me.
